A process to prepare polycarbamate comprising adding urea to a polyol in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of compounds having the following formula MZ; wherein M is a divalent metal, and Z is an anionic functionality or a functionality capable of forming a covalent bond with M and wherein n times a valence number of Z equals X and m times two equals Y wherein the absolute value of X equals the absolute value of Y is provided. The present invention provides carbamylation compositions of one or more urea compounds, one or more polyols and a monovalent transition metal or alkali metal catalyst (i), such as lithium ethylhexanoate, which compositions are substantially isocyanate free, enjoy reduced toxicity in comparison to tin catalysts, and which are useful in making polycarbamates which themselves provide compositions for making crosslinked polyurethanes.

The instant invention provides a crosslinkable coating composition, and method of producing the same. The polycarbamate of the present invention when combined with a polyaldehyde or an acetal or hemiacetal thereof as a second component makes a multicomponent composition that is substantially isocyanate-free, and cures at a temperature of from 0&#xb0; C. to less than 80&#xb0; C. to form a crosslinked polyurethane.
