Systems and methods are provided for managing a device in a vehicle, comprising: receiving a device registration request for the device; evaluating a list that includes a plurality of unique identifiers associated with a plurality of certificates; determining whether a particular unique identifier associated with a particular certificate is valid based on a length of time for the particular certificate; and communicating a signed version of the particular certificate to authorize a session for the device.

Certificate revocation and management for autonomous vehicles

By way of example, there is disclosed a method of a device communicating messages in a vehicle, such as an autonomous vehicle (AV), including: participating in mutual authentication with a key server located on the vehicle; receiving from the key server a cryptographic key; using the cryptographic key for symmetric cryptography, comprising signing messages sent to or verifying messages received from another device of the vehicle; and clearing the cryptographic key at reboot.

Short-lived symmetric keys for autonomous vehicles

Systems and methods are provided for managing private digital authentication information, known as secrets, for autonomous vehicles. In particular, systems and methods are provided for automating the acquisition of secrets by autonomous vehicles upon start-up, such that secrets are not stored on autonomous vehicles that are powered down. A secrets manager is installed on each autonomous vehicle that can request sets of secrets at start-up and provide the secrets to various modules in the vehicle. Secrets can be updated centrally and autonomous vehicles can easily access updated secrets.
