A photography subsystem is configured to be operated in fingerprint scanning mode and a normal mode. An autofocus module may be initialized to control a lens with an initial focal length set according to received instructions indicating one of the modes of operation. An image signal processor associated with the photography subsystem may process images received from the photography subsystem and, if necessary, process the images to form a candidate digital fingerprint for use in an authentication process.

In a broad aspect, embodiments described herein are generally directed to an electronic device comprising: a housing; a component mounted within the housing; a component cover in fixed relation to the housing; wherein the component cover is configurable between at least a first state and a second state; and wherein light transmissivity through the component cover is greater when in the second state than when in the first state. In some implementations, in the first state the component cover is substantially opaque, or in the second state the component cover is substantially transparent.

Illuminated optical navigation module

An optical navigation subsystem may be used when obtaining a candidate fingerprint for a mobile communication device (e.g., for authentication purposes). To accommodate such use of the optical navigation subsystem, the optical navigation subsystem may be adapted to automatically adjust a processed image sensor window from a first set of window dimensions (e.g., suitable for optical navigation) to a second set of window dimensions (e.g., suitable for fingerprint capture). Alternatively, a single, static set of window dimension may be employed in conjunction with stitching algorithms, or other methods suitable for forming candidate fingerprint images by combining a plurality of images obtained using the static set of window dimension.

Fingerprint scanning with optical navigation

A mobile computing device includes a flexible display, a rigid-flex printed circuit board (PCB) arrangement, an electrically conductive memory fabric, and a controller. The rigid-flex PCB arrangement is connected to the flexible display, and has a honeycomb configuration. The electrically conductive memory fabric is connected to the flexible display and the rigid-flex PCB arrangement. The controller is configured to, by selectively controlling supply of electrical current to the electrically conductive memory fabric, control whether the electrically conductive memory fabric (i) straightens and resists flexing of the flexible display and the rigid-flex PCB arrangement or (ii) is relaxed and allows flexing of the flexible display and the rigid-flex PCB arrangement.
