A system and method of filtering comprising adsorbing a toxic chemical using a metal-organic framework (MOF) compound that has been post-treated with fluorocarbons using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The toxic chemical may comprise any of ammonia and cyanogen chloride. Furthermore, the toxic chemical may comprise any of an acidic/acid-forming gas, basic/base-forming gas, oxidizer, reducer, and organic gas/vapor. The toxic chemical is physically adsorbed by the MOF compound. Moreover, the toxic chemical interacts with unsaturated metal sites within the MOF. Additionally, the MOF compound may comprise any of Cu-BTC, MOF-177, and an isoreticular metal-organic frame work (IRMOF) compound. The MOF compound may comprise a metal-carboxylate bond. Additionally, the MOF compound may be unstable in the presence of moisture.

Furthermore, the toxic chemical may comprise any of an acidic/acid-forming gas, basic/base-forming gas, oxidizer, reducer, and organic gas/vapor. The toxic chemical is physically adsorbed by the MOF compound. Moreover, the toxic chemical interacts with unsaturated metal sites within the MOF. A method of coating a surface with a polymer layer, which method comprises exposing said surface to a plasma comprising a monomeric unsaturated organic compound which comprises a chain of carbon atoms, which are optionally substituted by halogen; provided that where the compound is a perhalogenated alkene, it has a chain of at least 5 carbon atoms; so as to form an oil or water repellent coating on said substrate. Suitable compounds for use in the methods are compounds of formula (I) where R, Rand Rare independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl or aryl optionally substituted by halo; provided that at least one of R, Ror Ris hydrogen, and Ris a group X&#x2014;Rwhere Ris an alkyl or haloalkyl group and X is a bond; a group of formula &#x2014;C(O)O(CH)Y&#x2014; where n is an integer of from 1 to 10 and Y is a bond or a sulphonamide group; or a group &#x2014;(O)R(O)(CH)&#x2014; where Ris aryl optionally substituted by halo, p is 0 or 1, q is 0 or 1 and t is 0 or an integer of from 1 to 10, provided that where q is 1, t is other than 0. The method is particularly useful in the production of oil- and/or water repellent fabrics.

Surface coatings

The invention provides use of a polymer composition comprising polyethylenimine and one or both of polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl alcohol co-ethylene for protection against harmful and/or noxious agents. The invention further provides a laminate suitable for providing protection against harmful and/or noxious agents, the laminate comprising a layer of a polymer composition comprising polyethylenimine and one or both of polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl alcohol co-ethylene is also disclosed.

Polymers for water-permeable protective materials

The method is particularly useful in the production of oil- and/or water repellent fabrics.

A compound of formula (I), wherein R and R are independently selected from saturated fluorocarbon substituted side chains, such as NR (CH ) C F , O(CH ) C F , S(CH ) C F , NR S(O) (CH ) C F , or CR &lsqb;CO (CH ) C F &rsqb; , where R is hydrogen or alkyl, n and m are independently an integer of 1-12, and p is 0 or an integer of 1-12, R is an unsaturate moiety which may be polymerised, and X is O, S or NR where R is hydrogen or alkyl, as well as methods for the preparation of these compounds. Compounds of formula (I) are useful monomers in the preparation of oil- and water-repellent polymers.
