Light-emitting diode (LED) packages and more particularly LED packages with lead frame structures for flip-chip mounting of LED chips are disclosed. Lead frame structures include multiple leads with arrangements for LED chips to be flip-chip mounted across neighboring pairs of leads. Arrangements of stress relief features and anchoring features relative to mounting locations are provided in lead frame structures to enhance mechanical integrity of flip-chip bonds during thermal cycling. LED packages may further include housings that are formed about the lead frame structures. Housings may include a recess with recess floor arrangements for positioning of LED chips.

Solid-state lighting devices including light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and more particularly sealing structures for LED packages are disclosed. Sealing structures include multiple seals within an LED package that provide a multiple barrier structure for enhanced protection from elemental ingress from a surrounding environment. Certain seals may be provided as bonding materials between cover structures and submounts of LED packages, thereby enclosing LED chips. Additional seals may be provided as coatings on surfaces of LED chips and/or submounts that are between cover structures and LED chips. Sealing structures may include multiple levels of hermetic seals with LED packages.

Sealing structures for light-emitting diode packages

Solid-state lighting devices, and more particularly to a three-dimensional (3D) light-emitting diode (LED) device and a method of manufacture are disclosed. A submount of the LED can have several submount portions that are angled with respect to each other, and LED chips can be mounted on each submount portion, such that the LED chips of the device are angled at different angles with respect to each other. In an embodiment, the LED device can include a heatsink that is in contact with each of the submount portions to channel heat away from the LED chips. The LED chips can be mounted on the submount portions when all submount portions are laying flat, and then the submount portions can be pushed or punched into their respective angles.

Three dimensional LED device and method of manufacture

Light-emitting diode (LED) packages and more particularly emission height arrangements in LED packages and related devices and methods are disclosed. LED packages, LED chips, and related device arrangements are disclosed that include various combinations of LED chip types, lumiphoric materials, and/or cover structures that are arranged together while also providing a substantially uniform emission height for corresponding light-emitting surfaces. LED chips may be configured with different heights or thicknesses that compensate for variations in lumiphoric materials and/or cover structures utilized to provide different emission colors. Corresponding LED packages and/or LED chips with different emission colors may be assembled near one another with improved emission height uniformity.

Emission height arrangements in light-emitting diode packages and related devices and methods

Active control of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and LED packages within LED displays is disclosed. LED packages are disclosed that include a plurality of LED chips that form at least one LED pixel for an LED display. Each LED package may include an active electrical element that is configured to receive a control signal and actively maintain an operating state, such as brightness or grey level while other LED packages are being addressed. Active electrical elements may include active circuitry that includes one or more of a driver device, a signal conditioning or transformation device, a memory device, a decoder device, an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device, a thermal management device, and a detection device, among others. In this regard, each LED pixel of an LED display may be configured for operation with active matrix addressing.

Active control of light emitting diodes and light emitting diode displays

Solid-state lighting devices including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and more particularly polarization structures for LED devices are disclosed. Polarization structures are disclosed that are integrated within light-emitting devices and are capable of receiving unpolarized light and providing polarized light that exits the light-emitting devices. Polarization structures may be formed on or in various surfaces within light-emitting devices, such as one or more surfaces of cover structures and/or LED chips. LED packages with multiple LED chips and multiple polarization structures are also disclosed. The LED chips may be arranged to be electrically activated and deactivated independently of one another such that corresponding LED packages are capable of electronically switching between different orientations of polarized and/or unpolarized light.

Polarization structures for light-emitting diodes

Solid-state lighting devices including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and more particularly integrated warning structures for ultraviolet LED packages are disclosed. Integrated warning structures may include passive structures, such as lumiphoric material regions, that are arranged within LED packages to receive a portion of ultraviolet light from an LED chip within the LED package and provide a small amount of wavelength-converted light. Such wavelength-converted light may serve as indication that ultraviolet light is being emitted. Exemplary lumiphoric material regions may form one or more discrete regions within LED packages and may provide such wavelength-converted light without substantial impact on color purity of the LED packages. Accordingly, LED packages may provide integrated warning emissions that may serve to indicate the presence of ultraviolet emissions and/or reduce human exposure to such ultraviolet emissions.

Integrated warning structures for energized ultraviolet light-emitting diode packages

Solid-state lighting devices including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and more particularly integrated secondary optics into LED chip cover structures for improved optical emission of high intensity LEDs is disclosed. Optical elements are integrated as a secondary optic onto one or both surfaces of a chip cover structure, where the chip cover structure may be referred to as a primary optic. The integrated secondary optic may be formed directly on one or both surfaces of the chip cover structure. The integrated secondary optic is purposely built to be coupled with the light emission of the LED to emit a desired emission profile. In this regard, a final luminaire may be provided with increased efficiency either by improving the coupling of the LED into a conventional secondary optic or in some cases by removing the need for a conventional secondary optic all together.

Integration of secondary optics into chip covers for improved optical emission of high intensity light-emitting diodes

Solid-state lighting devices including light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and lens arrangements for packaged LED devices are disclosed. An LED package may include one or more LED chips on a submount with a lens positioned on the submount to form a cavity. The one or more LED chips may reside in the cavity without direct encapsulation materials that would otherwise contact the one or more LED chips and any corresponding wirebonds. In this manner, the one or more LED chips may be driven with higher drive currents while reducing degradation and mechanical strain effects related to differences in coefficients of thermal expansion with typical encapsulant materials. LED packages may also be configured with one or more apertures that allow air flow between an interior volume of a cavity and an ambient environment outside the LED package to promote heat dissipation at higher drive currents.

Lens arrangements for light-emitting diode packages

A light emitting device includes a LED having a light emitting first surface and a light emitting second surface that define a corner. A support layer is disposed to receive light emitted by the light emitting second surface and is disposed adjacent the corner. A luminophoric medium layer at least partially covers the light emitting first surface and the light emitting second surface where the luminophoric medium layer is at least partially supported by the support layer to prevent a narrowing of the luminophoric medium layer.
