The present disclosure relates to the preparation of pyridine derivatives, such as &#x3b1;-picoline or &#x3b1;-parvoline, and catalysts useful for the selective preparation of such pyridine derivatives. Particularly, the present disclosure relates to the selective preparation of certain pyridine derivative using dealuminated zeolite catalysts.

Zeolite catalyst

Disclosed herein are aminopyridinium cations and compositions containing these cations. Piperidino pyridinium cations and compositions containing these cations are also described. Ionic compositions, particularly liquid ionic compositions that contain the aminopyridinium cation or piperidino pyridinium cation are also described. Methods of enhancing the thermal stability of a compound, particularly an ionic compound, using the aminopyridinium or piperidino pyridinium cations, are also presented. Compositions having an expanded liquidus range of from about &#x2212;73&#xb0; C. to about 444&#xb0; C. are also described. Solvents, heat transfer fluids, and lubricants having improved thermal stability characteristics and an expanded and improved liquidus range are also disclosed.

Aminopyridinium ionic liquids

Described are preferred processes for preparing alkenyl-substituted nitrogenous heterocycles such as vinylpyridines, which comprise reacting a corresponding methyl-substituted heterocycle with a C compound such as formadehyde in the vapor phase over a zeolite catalyst having acidic and basic catalytic sites. The preferred zeolite is a medium-pore zeolite, for example having a constraint index of about 0.5 to about 12. Processes of the invention can be conducted as facile, one-step syntheses utilizing relatively low ratios of alkyl-substituted starting heterocycle (e.g. &agr;-picoline or &ggr;-picoline) to formaldehyde while nonetheless achieving high selectivities and yields of the corresponding alkenyl compound.

Processes for producing 3-cyanopyridine from 2-methyl-1,5-pentanediamine

A base synthesis process and catalyst for the preparation of pyridine or its alkylpyridine derivatives involving the catalytic reaction of one or more aldehydes and/or ketones containing from one to about five carbon atoms, with at least one reactant having more than one carbon atom, with ammonia in the gas phase. The catalyst comprises an effective amount of a large-pore zeolite having been prepared with a silica to alumina ratio of at least 15, and at least a first dimension having first channels formed by twelve-membered rings, and a second dimension having second channels formed by ten- or twelve-membered rings which intersect the first channels. The preferred zeolite is a zeolite having the structure of zeolite beta.

Pyridine base synthesis

There are provided processes for preparing quinolines by vapor phase reaction of a substituted or unsubstituted aniline base, formaldehyde and a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 aldehyde wherein the aldehydes:aniline base molar ratio is at least 2:1. More preferred processes of the invention achieve high selectivities and yields of 8-methylquinoline, and high conversions of the aniline base.
