Acrylic emulsion PSA polymers which when cast as a film resist water whitening by hot or ambient temperature water are provided, and are formed by copolymerizing a monomer mixture comprising at least one alkyl acrylate ester of an alcohol containing at least four carbon atoms, at least one polar comonomer and at least one partially water soluble comonomer present in an amount of at least about 7% by weight of the monomers. Polymerization is carried out in the presence of at least one nonionic surfactant containing at least about 8 moles of ethylene oxide per mole nonionic surfactant and at least one anionic surfactant containing up to about 10 moles ethylene oxide per mole anionic surfactant. There is added to the product of polymerization at least one base to produce an emulsion having a pH greater than 7 and containing particles having a mean &ldquo;volume-average&rdquo; particle diameter of up to about 210 nm as determined by laser light scattering. An electrolyte is post-polymerization added to stabilize opacity of the adhesive films cast from the emulsion. Applications include autoclavable labels, wet-stick container labels, fleet marking labels and battery labels.

Water whitening-resistant pressure-sensitive adhesives

General purpose inherently tacky acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive polymers formed of alkyl acrylates, vinyl esters, diesters of dicarboxylic acid and saturated carbocylic acids, having improved properties, a lower residual monomer content and a reduced polymerization time are formed by a sequential polymerization process in which 50 to 95 percent, typically 90 percent, of the monomers are incrementally added to a reactor as a first charge containing substantially all of the vinyl esters, preferably all of the diesters of dicarboxylic acid, the balance of the monomers being fed in a second incremental charge.

Process for the production of general purpose PSA's

General purpose inherently tacky acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive polymers formed of alkyl acrylates, vinyl esters, and saturated carboxylic acids, having improved properties, a lower residual monomer content are formed by a sequential emulsion polymerization process in which 40 to 70 percent, typically 45 percent, of the monomers are incrementally added to a reactor as a first charge containing substantially all of the vinyl esters, the balance of the monomers being fed in a second incremental charge.

Process for the production of improved PSA's

A inherently tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive copolymer is formed by copolymerizing at least one alkyl acrylate in the presence of a positive amount up to 50 percent by weight of the monomers of a polar acrylate monomer which, when homopolymerized, have a glass transition temperature less than 50.degree. C.

Polar pressure-sensitive adhesives

Inherently tacky infusible pressure-sensitive adhesive microspheres prepared by suspension polymerization of at least one water insoluble alkyl acrylate ester, the improvement which comprises conducting the polymerization in the presence of a buffer provided in an amount sufficient to maintain pH between 6 to 9.5 and in the presence of a surfactant to stabilize the product.

Suspension polymerization

There is provided a pressure-sensitive adhesive graft copolymer formed by reacting an acrylic monomer system comprising at least one alkyl acrylate ester containing from about 4 to about 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group in the presence of a macromer selected from the group consisting of ethylene-butylene and ethylene-propylene macromers and mixtures thereof with each of said macromer having a molecular weight of from about 2,000 to about 30,000, a glass transition temperature of less than about 0.degree. C. and a terminal reactive group of acrylate or methacrylate.

Acrylic saturated rubber hybrid pressure-sensitive adhesives

There is provided a pressure-sensitive adhesive graft copolymer formed of an acrylic backbone comprising at least one alkyl acrylate ester containing from about 4 to about 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group having pendant therefrom side chains having a molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 25,000, a glass transition temperature of greater than about 25.degree. C. and having crosslinkable reactive moieties.

Crosslinkable graft pressure-sensitive adhesives

Inherently tacky infusible pressure-sensitive adhesive microspheres prepared by polymerizing at least one monomer which when polymerized will form a pressure-sensitive adhesive having a glass transition temperature less than about -20.degree. C. in a medium in which the monomer is substantially insoluble and in the presence of a surfactant and a suspension stabilizer which are soluble in the organic medium and substantially insoluble in the monomer under conditions of shear sufficient to form suspended particles of a size less than 200 microns. The formed microspheres are transferred to a volatile organic medium and separated from the medium in which they were formed by a centrifugal separator at a force of at least 2,000 times the force of gravity.

Suspension polymerization in an organic medium

Pressure-sensitive copolymers based on acrylic monomers are provided with high adhesive performance characteristics by the inclusion of a synergistic amount of an N-vinyl lactam monomer and a glycidyl monomer with the bulk of the monomers being an alkyl acrylate and/or methacrylate esters.
