A process for the production of an open metal mesh the surfaces of which are coated with a coating of an electrocatalytically-active material, the process comprising forming a plurality of slits in a sheet of metal, applying a coating of an electrocatalytically-active material to the slit sheet, and stretching the coated sheet to expand the sheet and form the open mesh. The mesh is suitable for use as an anode in cathodic protection of steel-containing structures, for example, steel-reinforced concrete structures.

An electrolytic cell comprising a plurality of anodes and cathodes and a separator positioned between each anode and adjacent cathode to form a plurality of anode compartments and cathode compartments, in which a barrier member is positioned at an upper part of the cell between an anode and an adjacent separator, or between a cathode and an adjacent separator, and which, in operation shields the separator from contact with a gaseous product of electrolysis which may collect in an upper part of the anode compartment, or in an upper part of the cathode compartment. The separator may be an ion-exchange membrane, and the barrier member protects the separator from chemical attach by gaseous products of electrolysis.

Electrolytic cell

A method of assembling an electrolytic cell of the filter press type comprising a plurality of anodes, cathodes, gaskets of an electrically insulating material, and separators, in which the electrolytic cell is assembled on a jig comprising a support unit having removably affixed thereto a plurality of substantially horizontally disposed support members positioned to at least one side of said unit, and preferably to both sides of said unit, the method comprising positioning anodes, cathodes and gaskets on said horizontally disposed support members with a separator positioned between an adjacent anode and cathode, removing the support unit, and compressing the thus formed assembly of anodes, cathodes, gaskets and separators on the horizontally disposed support members to form the electrolytic cell.
