The disclosure relates to a method of evaluating characteristics of an earth formation, comprising deploying a packer assembly in a borehole penetrating an earth formation, the packer assembly comprising an instrumented inflatable packer element including fiber optic sensors; inflating the instrumented inflatable packer elements; detecting, using the fiber optic sensors, events occurring in the earth formation; and transmitting data corresponding to the detected events to a surface processing system. The disclosure also relates to a packer element and a instrumented packer assembly system. The disclosure may enable to derive formation characteristic in several configurations such as a stress test or a hydraulic fracturing configuration.

Instrumented packer having distributed fiber optic sensor

A system and technique for obtaining two or more distributed measurements from an optical sensing fiber deployed along a desired measuring path are disclosed. Interrogating probes from two or more different distributed measuring systems are combined and launched into the sensing fiber. Backscattered light generated in response to the combined interrogating probes is separated into portions and each portion is provided to a respective distributed measuring instrument. In this manner, distributed measurements corresponding to different parameters of interest, such as temperature and pressure, along the measuring path can be measured simultaneously using the same sensing fiber.

Simultaneous distributed measurements on optical fiber

A well-logging system includes a first downhole tool coupled to a first cable for conveying the first downhole tool along a wellbore. A second downhole tool having a housing is coupled to a second cable for conveying the second downhole tool along the wellbore. The well-logging system includes a cable guide having a chassis structure coupled to the housing and a sleeve coupled to the chassis structure and disposed about the first cable. The first cable is configured to translate along the sleeve such that the sleeve facilitates guided movement of the first downhole tool relative to the second downhole tool.

Multi-cable wireline guide systems and methods

A method includes varying a temperature of a treatment fluid. The treatment fluid is pumped into the first wellbore as part of a fluid diversion process or a fluid treatment process after the temperature of the treatment fluid is varied. A first downhole measurement is obtained in the first wellbore using a cable in the first wellbore or a first sensor coupled to the cable concurrently with or after the fluid diversion process or the fluid treatment process. An additional measurement is obtained concurrently with obtaining the first downhole measurement. The first downhole measurement and the additional measurement are combined or compared. A location where the treatment fluid is flowing through perforations in the first wellbore is determined based upon the combining or comparing the first downhole measurement and the additional measurement.

Fiber optic measurements to evaluate fluid flow

An optical-fiber-containing sensor wire with at least one hermetically sealed optical fiber are provided. An optical-fiber-containing sensor wire may be installed in a cable that can be placed downhole in a wellbore. The optical-fiber-containing sensor wire may include a first optical fiber hermetically sealed within a metallic structure of the optical-fiber-containing sensor wire.

Sensor construction for distributed pressure sensing

A technique facilitates monitoring of flow conditions with respect to flow through a tubing. A distributed sensor is routed along an interior of the tubing to monitor flow conditions. For example, the distributed sensor may be routed over a length of the tubing having a lateral opening. Fluid is flowed along the distributed sensor and within the interior of the tubing. The distributed sensor is operated to measure strain which results from flow of the fluid along the distributed sensor. The strain may then be evaluated to determine a change in a flow condition, such as a change in a flow condition related to the lateral opening.

A method can include, during a treatment process, receiving vibration data acquired over a length of a fiber cable sensor disposed in a well that includes perforations; filtering the vibration data as to traveling waves to generate filtered data; analyzing the filtered data to generate fluid flow information; and adjusting the treatment process based at least in part on the fluid flow information.

Treatment based on fiber cable sensor data

A technique provides protection against unwanted conditions in wellhead structures and other structures. According to the technique, a system provides a feed through in a wellhead structure or other type of structure. The feed through may accommodate a communication line routed therethrough. A closing device is positioned in the structure at a location to enable closing of the feed through via the closing device. Additionally, a condition-sensitive device is operatively engaged with the closing device to initiate actuation of the closing device once the condition-sensitive device is exposed to a predetermined condition. Upon exposure to the predetermined condition, the condition-sensitive device initiates closing of the feed through via the closing device.

A multiple sensor fiber optic sensing system includes an optical fiber having at least first fiber optic sensors and second fiber optic sensors deployed along its length. In response to an interrogating pulse, the first fiber optic sensors generate responses in a first optical spectrum window, and the second fiber optic sensors generate responses in a second, different optical spectrum window. The responses in the first optical spectrum window are measured in a first optical spectrum channel, and the responses in the second optical spectrum window are measure in a second, different optical spectrum channel and provide simultaneous indications of one or more parameters, such as temperature and pressure, in the environment in which the sensors are deployed.

Methods and apparatus for acquiring acceleration waveform measurements while deploying a tool along a borehole. A conveyance and a sensor section are configured to deploy the sensor section in the borehole. At least one multi-axis receiver is configured to detect acceleration waveform signals while the sensor section is being deployed in the borehole.

Methods and systems for acquiring acceleration waveforms in a borehole

A fiber optic distributed vibration system for detecting seismic signals in an earth formation is provided. The system includes a fiber optic cable deployed in a borehole that extends into the earth formation and which is configured to react along its length to a seismic wave incident on the fiber optic cable from outside the borehole. An optical source launches an optical signal into the fiber optic cable while the seismic wave is incident thereon. A receiver detects coherent Rayleigh noise (CRN) produced in response to the optical signal. A processing circuit processes the detected CRN signal to determine characteristics of the earth formation.

Detection of seismic signals using fiber optic distributed sensors

Methods and apparatus for borehole seismic survey are disclosed comprising a first seismic source under water at a first location and a second seismic source at a second, deeper location. Seismic signals from the seismic sources are recorded with synchronized sensors located in a borehole and source signature data are obtained by combining the recorded seismic signals such that low and high frequency content of the combined source signature data is extended relative to the source signature of the first seismic source and the second seismic source.
