The technology relates to a transportable gas detector unit configured to operate in a detection mode and a test mode for gas sensor testing and calibration. The transportable gas detector is configured with one or more gas sources mounted on the gas detector unit by mounting points to rigidly hold the gas sources in place when the gas detector unit is moved, enabling remote testing/calibration of gas sensors.

A person-worn safety device that communicates bi-directionally and wirelessly with a remote receiver system. An accelerometer sensor detects the worker's activity levels to verify the worker's safety, and identify periods of unduly strenuous activity or undue lack of activity. The system also identifies worker position from localized radio signals from terrestrial sources. A manually actuable lever and button are usable by the worker to indicate a need for assistance. A visual or audio interface allows feedback to the worker originated by the device processor or remote server.

A combined toxic gas sensor and an oxygen sensor includes a sensor body with a top plate provided with a toxic gas diffusion barrier leading to a chamber from having an outlet aperture registering with the diffusion barrier of the oxygen sensor.

A method for detecting combustible gases or vapours using a combustible gas sensor or pellistors includes the steps of keeping the combustible gas sensor or the pellistor beads inactive until an oxygen sensor indicates a variation from a reference level of oxygen, such variation representing the potential presence of combustible gases or vapours.
