A biometric certifying authority (BCA) management system and method provide and maintain a hierarchical relationship among biometric certifying authorities in the issuance of biometric certificates. Biometric certificates may be used in all electronic transactions requiring authentication of the participants, based on the accuracy and uniqueness of the biometric, which allows the electronic transaction to be insured to provide global standards for all electronic commerce. The BCA management system includes a transaction request parser which extracts a biometric certificate signal and transaction-type data from a electronic transaction request. A biometric verification processor verifies the biometric certificate signal against previously stored biometric data in a database. The biometric verification processor generates a verification message corresponding to the authenticity or fraudulent status of the biometric certificate signal. A transaction type classifier receives the electronic transaction request, and generates a classification message according to the transaction-type data. A certifying authority processor generates an access-or-denial message to indicate the status of the electronic transaction, and to report the classification of the transaction request.

Biometric certifying authorities

A network interface device includes a first interface operable to receive at least two incoming calls over a subscriber line, and a second interface operable to facilitate communication between the first interface and a first telephone line and between the first interface and a second telephone line. The second interface is also operable to generate one or more first ring voltages on the first telephone line and one or more second ring voltages on the second telephone line. The network interface device also includes a processor coupled to the first interface and the second interface. The processor is operable to instruct the second interface to generate the first and second ring voltages in response to receiving the incoming calls. The processor is also operable to allocate the first and second ring voltages among the first and second telephone lines to ensure that a total instantaneous load placed on the second interface does not exceed a determined threshold level.

Network interface device and method

A system and method for conducting fast biometric database searches using iris recognition and digital certificates. Authentication of a computing platform is provided based on a digital certificates attached thereto. Fast database searching and identification of a person at the computing platform are provided based on the digital certificate which is used to point to a database partition having stored biometric images and an obtained biometric image, such as an iris template, which is compared to the stored biometric images in order to identify the person. Access to the database containing stored biometric images may be granted based on the results of the digital certificate authentication process. The use of digital certificates narrows the database search to only those individuals who have authorized access to a particular computing platform by using the digital certificates. The inclusion of the iris template allows for the reliable identification of an individual at the computing platform using digital certificates both as the secure transport method and as the means to ensure the privacy of the individual and their iris template. A level of access and other entitlements to use the computing platform may also be granted to the person based on the results of the identification process.

System and method of fast biometric database searching using digital certificates

A compact, handheld imaging apparatus which can be used to capture high-quality iris images for identification of a person. The handheld iris imager is non-invasive and non-contacting and comprises a camera, a cold mirror, a lens, and an illuminator. The imager has sensors and indicators which assist a user in aligning and focusing the device. The imager also automatically captures the image when proper positioning is achieved. A template of the image is then compared to a database of previously stored templates of images to identify the person. The imager is integrated into a telecommunications device as a security module. The telecommunications device cannot be unlocked and used unless a user has been identified and authorized by the imager.

Iris imaging telephone security module and method

A system and method of identification of an animal based on features of the iris of an eye are disclosed. An image of the animal's eye is captured using an iris acquisition device that combines a camera, an optical system, an illumination source, and a viewing screen, preferably in one small, hand-held device. A biometric template based on the features of the animal's iris is extracted from the captured iris image. The identity of the animal is determined by comparing the obtained biometric template with a previously-obtained and stored biometric template, collected under conditions which permit independent verification of identity, and stored in a database along with identification information. A system and method of animal transaction authorization is also provided wherein the identification of an animal is authenticated, the identification of a person in the animal identity and tracking chain is authenticated, and an animal transaction is authorized of based on a match between the identity of the person in the animal identity and tracking chain and the identity of the animal. Preferably, the animal and person identification is accomplished using iris recognition techniques, and the animal and person identities are keyed to one another in a database to facilitate the matching between the animal and the person.

System and method of animal identification and animal transaction authorization using iris patterns

Biometric identification is combined with digital certificates for electronic authentication as biometric certificates. The biometric certificates are managed through the use of a biometric certificate management system. Biometric certificates may be used in any electronic transaction requiring authentication of the participants. Biometric data is pre-stored in a biometric database of the biometric certificate management system by receiving data corresponding to physical characteristics of registered users through a biometric input device. Subsequent transactions to be conducted over a network have digital signatures generated from the physical characteristics of a current user and from the electronic transaction. The electronic transaction is authenticated by comparison of hash values in the digital signature with re-created hash values. The user is authenticated by comparison against the pre-stored biometric certificates of the physical characteristics of users in the biometric database.

Biometric certificates

A biometric watermark system and method generate a biometrically encoded bitstream from biometric data of a user and from electronic data to be transmitted to the user. The encoded bitstream has the biometric data acting as a biometric watermark. The encoded bitstream is then sent to a decoder of the user, with the biometric watermark providing security in the transmission in order to prevent unauthorized users from extracting the electronic data. The decoder utilizes the biometric data of the user to decode the biometrically encoded bitstream, so as to extract the biometric watermark, and to securely retrieve the electronic data.

Biometric watermarks

A technique for combining biometric identification with digital certificates for electronic authentication called biometric certificates. The technique includes the management of biometric certificates through the use of a biometric certificate management system. Biometric certificates may be used in any electronic transaction requiring authentication of the participants. Biometric data is pre-stored in a biometric database of the biometric certificate management system by receiving data corresponding to physical characteristics of registered users through a biometric input device. Subsequent transactions to be conducted over a network have biometric certificates generated from the physical characteristics of a current user, which is then appended to the transaction, and which then authenticates the user by comparison against the pre-stored biometric data of the physical characteristics of users in the biometric database.
