A field assemblable multifiber optical connector has a tubular housing enclosing a passage in which we inserted two plug assemblages having respective butting front end faces butting each other. Each assemblage comprises (a) a plug consisting of two plates spaced by a gap and having on opposite sides of such gap respective registering sets of laterally spaced gooves defining fiber receptacle channels running to such end faces, and respective pairs of longer groves deferring similarly running pin receptacle channels flanking such fiber channels, and (b) a resilient clip coupled to both guide plates to urge them towards each other and maintain them in alignment. Initially, each such assemblage also includes a comb at the back of the plug for aiding insertion of optical fibers into it. The housing also mounts in its passage a pair of aligning pins receivable partly in both one and the other of the plugs in their pin channels. To effect field assembly, the plug assemblages are removed from the housing, fibers from corresponding optic fiber cables are advanced through the fiber channels in the plugs to their end faces, the guide plates of each plug are then bonded together by adhesive, and the plug assemblages are then replaced in the housing with end faces abutting to produce an optical splice between the two sets of fibers, respectively, in the two plugs. The resilient clips of the assemblages are concurrently coupled both to the plugs and to the housing to maintain such end faces in yieldable mutual pressure contact.

Field-assemblable multifiber optical connector

A connector (20) for terminating a duplex cable jumper cable (23) which is used for making interconnections in administrative locations of an FDDI system includes a plastic housing (21) having a jumper input end (26) and a connection end (28). Each fiber (25) of the jumper cable is terminated by a ferrule (64) which is supported in the housing and which has a portion that extends from the connection end of the housing. The protruding ends of the ferrules are protected by a shroud (130) which is removably attached to the connection end of the housing. Inasmuch as the shroud is removable, the end portions of the ferrules may be accessed for cleaning. Advantageously, the shroud may be provided with a keyway (157) to facilitate the mating of a connector with a key arrangement (159) in a receptacle (125) into which the connector is to be inserted. Different shrouds may be attached to the housing to facilitate the insertion of the connector into a desired receptacle.

Duplex optical fiber connector and cables terminated therewith

Two plugs each comprises a pair of plastic guide plates with inner sides in which are formed duplicate groove patterns each consisting of parallel V-sided spaced grooves running through the plugs and divided into a central set of smaller 'fiber' grooves and a pair of larger 'pin' grooves on opposite sides of and spaced from the pin grooves. The two plates in each plug are disposed with their respective groove patterns registering with each other across a transverse gap such that the fiber grooves define a set of fiber channels extending through the plug from its rear to an end face on a front nose on the plug, the pin grooves defining a pair of pin channels having front openings rearward of such end face. Optical fibers from a ribbon type cable extend through the fiber grooves to the front of the nose. The two plates are bonded together by adhesive filling the spaces in the fiber channels around the fibers, and filling also the portions of the gap between adjacent fiber channels, but not occupying the gap between portions of the plates outward of the outermost fiber channels and including the pin channels. The two plugs are joined into an optical connector by a pair of aligning pins received in the pin channels of both plugs to hold them in nose-to-nose relation so as to align with each other the optical fiber ends respectively exposed at the front ends of one and the other of such plugs, and to produce, thereby, an optical splicing of the fibers, in respectively, the two plugs. The groove patterns in the plates in each plug may be derived from a common master pattern formed in a silicon chip.

Multifiber optical connector and method of making same

A connector body (26) which terminates at least one transmission medium includes on each side thereof a cantilevered arm (66) having a latching nub (70) projecting from a free end of the arm. A release cover (80) having a gripping portion (88) oriented toward a cable input end (32) of the connector body is mounted slidably on the connector body with the latching nubs of the arms each projecting through a window (90) in the cover. Conductors in the connector body are connected to conductors of another connector or of a device by inserting the connector body and release cover into a coupling (100) or into a receptacle. The latching nubs of the arms protrude into openings (106--106) provided in a housing (102) of the coupling to secure the connector body thereto. In order to withdraw the connector body from the coupling, a user moves the cover slidably along the connector body toward the cable input end. Walls which define the windows of the cover cam against the latching nubs causing them to be depressed as the free ends of the arms are moved inwardly. Once the nubs have cleared the openings in the coupling or in the receptacle, the connector body and release cover may be withdrawn from the housing. The release cover also is effective when forces of a predetermined magnitude are applied to the connector body to cause the latching nubs to become disengaged from the coupling and allow withdrawal of the connector body therefrom.

Connector assembly having a latching mechanism

An optical fiber connector (20) includes two plug assemblies (37--37) each including a cylindrically shaped plug (40) extending from within a cap (70). An end of each cap is adapted to be secured to a coupling housing (92) to cause the plug which extends from the cap to be received in a sleeve (105) disposed in the housing. An optical fiber cable (22) extends through a cable entrance end of the cap and has an end portion of its optical fiber terminated by theplug. An extender(85) of the cap is secured thereto and extends along the cable a distance to a location where portions (91--91) thereof are closely adjacent to the cable. Bending forces applied to the cable are transferred at the location to the extender and then to the cap. This avoids the transfer of those forces to the plug which otherwise could cause the plug to turn pivotally about an interior lip of the cap and result in an optical disconnection of the plug from the other plug in the sleeve.

Optical fiber connector

An optical fiber connector comprising a fiber terminus piece with a longitudinal bore through which a bare fiber is inserted. The fiber terminus piece with an appropriately prepared fiber therein is held coaxially aligned with a mating terminus piece. The fiber terminus piece comprises, on its mating face, a 'pedestal,' typically having truncated-cone shape, extending outwardly from the plane of the face, with the fiber terminating within the face of the pedestal, whereby the area of potential contact between the mating terminus pieces is substantially reduced. The pedestal material advantageously is somewhat compliant, of compressive modulus between about 10.sup.4 and 10.sup.6 psi at 25.degree. C., preferably between about 10.sup.5 and 5.10.sup.5 psi. The novel geometry results in improved performance, as compared to prior art connectors having flat mating faces. Disclosed are also connectors comprising advantageous means for transferring axial loads from a cable strength member to the connector body.
