Process for the preparation of 1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane

The present invention provides a process for preparing 1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane (245cb), the process comprising gas phase catalytic dehydrochlorination of a composition comprising 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,3-dichloropropane (243db) to produce an intermediate composition comprising 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-chloro-prop-1-ene (CFCCl&#x2550;CH, 1233xf), hydrogen chloride (HCl) and, optionally, air; and gas phase catalytic fluorination with hydrogen fluoride (HF) of the intermediate composition to produce a reactor product composition comprising 245cb, HF, HCl and air; wherein the process is carried out with a co-feed of air.

The present invention provides an integrated process for preparing 2,3,3, 3-tetrafluoropropene (1234yf), the process comprising: (a) vapour phase catalytic fluorination of a first composition comprising 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-chloro-prop-1-ene (CF3C&#x2014;CNCH2, 1233xf) with hydrogen fluoride (HF) in a fluorination reactor to produce a fluorination product stream comprising 1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane (245cb), HF and HCI; (b) vapour phase catalytic dehydrofluorination composition comprising 245cb in a dehydrofluorination reactor to produce a dehydrofluorination product stream comprising 1234yf and HF; wherein the fluorination product stream and the dehydrofluorination product stream are combined and subjected to (c) purification to produce a composition comprising 245cb and a 1234yf product stream.

Process for the preparation of 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (1234yf)

The present invention provides a process for preparing 3,3,3-trifluoropropene (1243zf), the process comprising: (a)fluorinating CClCHCHCI (250fb) to produce a reaction product comprising CFCHCHCI (253fb) in the liquid phase in a first reactor, using HF as the fluorinating agent; and (b)(i) dehydrohalogenating 253fb to produce 1243zf in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst in a second reactor; or (b)(ii) dehydrohalogenating 253fb to produce 1243zf in a second reactor, wherein the reaction product comprising 253fb produced in step (a) has subjected to one or more purification steps before step (b). The present invention also provides an azeotropic or near-azeotropic composition comprising HF and 253fb.

A process for the production of dichlorotrifluoroethane is described. The process comprises reacting perchloroethylene with hydrogen fluoride (HF) at elevated temperature in the vapour phase in at least one reactor in the presence of a fluorination catalyst. The process is operated so that 30 weight % or more of the perchloroethylene reactant that is fed to the at least one reactor remains unreacted having passed through the or each reactor. The dichlorotrifluoroethane may be purified and then used as it is or used to prepare pentafluoroethane.

Process for the production of pentafluroethane

A process for the production of pentafluoroethane is described. The process comprises reacting perchloroethylene with hydrogen fluoride in the vapor phase in a first reactor or a first plurality of reactors in the presence of a fluorination catalyst to produce a composition comprising dichlorotrifluoroethane, hydrogen chloride, unreacted hydrogen fluoride and perchloroethylene. This composition is subjected to a separation step to yield a purified composition comprising at least 95 weight % of dichlorotrifluorethane and less than 0.5 weight % of compounds having the formula CCF, where x is an integer of from 0 to 6, base the total weight of organic compounds in the composition. The composition from the separation step is then reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the vapor phase in a second reactor or a second plurality of reactors in the presence of a fluorination catalyst to produce a composition comprising pentafluoroethane and less than 0.5 weight % of chloropentafluoroethane, based on the total weight of organic compounds in the composition.

Process for the production of pentafluoroethane

A process for the production of dichlorotrifluoroethane is described. The process comprises reacting perchloroethylene with hydrogen fluoride in the vapor phase at elevated temperature in at least one reactor in the presence of a fluorination catalyst to produce a composition comprising dichlorotrifluoroethane, hydrogen chloride, unreacted perchloroethylene and unreacted hydrogen fluoride. The composition that is produced is subjected to a separation step to recover a first fraction comprising dichlorotrifluoroethane and a second fraction comprising perchloroethylene and hydrogen fluoride. The second fraction is further separated into a hydrogen fluoride-rich fraction and a perchloroethylene-containing, organic-rich fraction which are then recycled. The dichlorotrifluoroethane that is recovered may be used to prepare pentafluoroethane.

A process for the production of a hydrofluoroalkane, which process comprises contacting a hydrochlorofluoroethane of formula CClXYCFHZ, wherein X and Y are each independently chlorine or fluorine and Z is chlorine, fluorine or hydrogen, in the liquid phase with hydrogen fluoride and a fluorination catalyst and recovering a hydrofluoroalkane from the resulting products.
