Herbicidal methods and compositions using

Compositions and methods for combatting insects, fungal and bacterial plant pests are disclosed wherein the active ingredient is a compound of the formula Z--NH--Y wherein X is selected from the group consisting of a pyrazinyl radical bearing one to three substitutents, and pyrimidinyl and pyridazinyl radicals bearing two to three substituents; and Y represents phenyl, naphthyl, pyridyl or diazinyl bearing at least one substituent; the substituents in each case selected from the group consisting of halogen, cyano, nitro, trifluoromethyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, benzylthio, lower alkyl and amino, provided that (a) the compound bears at least four substituents of which at least two are halogen atoms, and (b) where X represents a pyrimidinyl radical and Y represents a pyridyl radical there is at least one substituent other than halogen present.

The present invention relates to polysubstituted aryl amino pyridines herbicidal and pesticidal compositions useful, inter alia, in controlling pests including fungal infections of plants, and in inhibiting the growth of unwanted vegetation; to chemical compounds useful as active ingredients of such compositions; to methods of controlling pests including fungal infections of plants: and to methods of inhibiting the growth of unwanted vegetation.

Certain aryl amino pyridines

A process of preparing the herbicide N-phosphonomethylglycine which comprises reacting an N-substituted glycine derivative of the formula: ##EQU1## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom or an esterifying group, Ar is an aryl radical, and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each stand for a hydrogen atom or an aryl radical, with formaldehyde and phosphorous acid in an acidic aqueous medium to give an N-substituted N-phosphonomethylglycine derivative of the formula: ##EQU2## and thereafter reacting the said N-substituted N-phosphonomethylglycine with hydrobromic or hydriodic acid to remove the N-substituent, and recovering N-phosphonomethylglycine.
