A hardware integer saturation detector that detects both whether packing a 32-bit integer value causes saturation and whether packing each of first and second 16-bit integer values causes saturation, where the first 16-bit integer value is the upper 16 bits of the 32-bit integer value and the second 16-bit integer value is the lower 16 bits of the 32-bit integer value. The detector includes hardware signal logic, configured to generate four signals with information about the integer values. The hardware integer detector also includes saturation logic, configured to gate the four signals to generate a saturation signal. Each bit of the saturation signal indicates whether packing the 32-bit integer value or whether packing one of the first and second 16-bit integer values will cause saturation respectively.

Saturation detector

A memory subsystem in a microprocessor includes a first-level cache, a second-level cache, and a prefetch cache configured to speculatively prefetch cache lines from a memory external to the microprocessor. The second-level cache and the prefetch cache are configured to allow the same cache line to be simultaneously present in both. If a request by the first-level cache for a cache line hits in both the second-level cache and in the prefetch cache, the prefetch cache invalidates its copy of the cache line and the second-level cache provides the cache line to the first-level cache.

Efficient data prefetching in the presence of load hits

A microprocessor configured to access an external memory includes a first-level cache, a second-level cache, and a bus interface unit (BIU) configured to interface the first-level and second-level caches to a bus used to access the external memory. The BIU is configured to prioritize requests from the first-level cache above requests from the second-level cache. The second-level cache is configured to generate a first request to the BIU to fetch a cache line from the external memory. The second-level cache is also configured to detect that the first-level cache has subsequently generated a second request to the second-level cache for the same cache line. The second-level cache is also configured to request the BIU to refrain from performing a transaction on the bus to fulfill the first request if the BIU has not yet been granted ownership of the bus to fulfill the first request.

A BIU prioritizes L1 requests above L2 requests. The L2 generates a first request to the BIU and detects the generation of a snoop request and L1 request to the same cache line. The L2 determines whether a bus transaction to fulfill the first request may be retried and, if so, generates a miss, and otherwise generates a hit. Alternatively, the L2 detects the L1 generated a request to the L2 for the same line and responsively requests the BIU to refrain from performing a transaction on the bus to fulfill the first request if the BIU has not yet been granted the bus. Alternatively, a prefetch cache and the L2 allow the same line to be simultaneously present. If an L1 request hits in both the L2 and in the prefetch cache, the prefetch cache invalidates its copy of the line and the L2 provides the line to the L1.

In a data processing system, a memory control unit (22) provides a control register bit field (60), logic, and a state machine (62) which facilitate a programmable number of clocks for an initial access to an on-chip memory (20). Specifically, the memory control unit (22) allows an external user to modify memory control signals to provide consistent access times across different frequencies of the system clock and allows memory control signals to be modified to optimize access time dynamically. Also, programmable control of the control signals to the memory (20) allows the memory to operate at system clock frequencies which are higher than expected.

Method and apparatus for selectively programming access time in a data

A system bus controller (103) within a processor (101) includes programmable logic for different modes of chip enable signals on a per-address-space basis. This allows for a 'glueless' interface (107) between the processor (101) and different types of external devices (111, 112, 113), such as memory devices. A chip select register value 604, 608, 612 is preprogrammed with respect to each external device coupled to the processor (101). This preprogrammed register value 604, 608, 612 is used by the system bus controller (103) to uniquely configure a read/write access signal to be sent to each of the external devices (111, 112, 113).
