An approach is provided for separating a selected component from a plurality of components in a multi-component medium. A multi-component medium is created, including thermally conductive layer into which a template of patterned thermally conductive elements that are thermally separated from each other, a thermally active adhesion layer in thermal communication with the thermally conductive template, and a set of components attached to the thermally active adhesion layer in substantially the same pattern as thermally conductive template. The medium allows a selected component to be released by applying energy to a selected thermally conductive element corresponding to the selected component, inducing a temperature differential reducing the adhesion of the thermally active adhesion layer, without releasing non-selected components.

Methods and systems for controlling temperature across a region defined by using thermally conductive elements

Disclosed herein is a method of purifying and doping a population of semiconductor nanocrystals. The method includes mixing the population of semiconductor nanocrystals having a first material system and a first ligand with a set of particles in the presence of a first solvent, the set of particles having a second material system which is different from the first material system and a second ligand which is different from the first ligand, to form a mixture. The method also includes facilitating a ligand exchange and an ionic exchange in the mixture, altering the first material system of the population of semiconductor nanocrystals to a third material system, different from the first material system and the second material system. The method includes sonicating the mixture and isolating the population of semiconductor nanocrystals having the third material system and the second ligand from the mixture.

Purification of nanocrystals for thermoelectric, solar, and electronic applications

Disclosed are a thermoelectric material and a method of forming a thermoelectric material having an optimal stoichiometry, the method including obtaining a first precursor material, wherein the first precursor material is an antimony precursor, and obtaining a second precursor material, wherein the second precursor is chosen from the group consisting of a tellurium precursor and a selenium precursor. A Fabry-Perot optical switch includes a saturable absorber surrounded by a pair of mirrors. Coupled to the saturable absorber is an input waveguide, an output waveguide, and a control beam waveguide. In the absence of light input to the control beam waveguide, the saturable absorber prevents an input signal on the input waveguide from passing through and being output on the output waveguide, thus placing the switch in an &ldquo;off&rdquo; state. In the presence of light input to the control beam waveguide and incident on the saturable absorber, the saturable absorber allows the input signal to pass through and be output on the output waveguide, or be reflected and output on the output waveguide, thus placing the switch in an &ldquo;on&rdquo; state.

An optical dispersion compensator includes a saturable absorber. Coupled to the saturable absorber is a pre-amplifier and a post-amplifier. The saturable absorber compresses optical pulse signals based upon the amplitude envelope of the optical pulse in order to prevent optical dispersion.
