A three stage beam welding method is provided which is particularly useful for reliably joining two bulky, irregularly configured workpieces requiring a deep weld. The method is especially well suited for joining a piece to replace a broken or damaged portion of a tool to the tool body. In accordance with the present method, a first high energy beam is applied to the joint between the workpieces to penetrate the joint and to produce at least one undercut on the workpiece exterior surface, an optional second high energy beam is substantially simultaneously applied to the joint to smooth and flatten the undercut, and a third high energy beam is applied to the joint to heat treat the welded joint, thereby improving its metallic microstructure and mechanical properties. The three stages of this beam welding process may be repeated sequentially for the number of times required to produce a mechanically optimal, reliable joint between two particular workpieces.

A process and apparatus for drilling precision small diameter holes in fuel nozzle parts includes the process of directing a laser beam against the nozzle part at a first hole drilling station to form an undersized hole therethrough and thereafter positioning the nozzle part with the laser hole formed therethrough in alignment with a wire electrode of an electrical discharge machine and controlling the energy input to the electrode wire and advancing it with respect to the preformed laser hole so as to form a precision hole diameter and surface finish throughout the length of the laser beam formed hole as EDM particles are flushed through a flow path defined by the laser hole from one face to the opposite face of a part wall.

A poppet-type valve having a circumferential seating face including an annular seating area extending between inner and outer radial limits, a circumferential groove formed in the seating face and hardfacing material in the groove, the groove extending radially inwardly from the valve head periphery a sufficient distance beyond the inner radial limit that high temperature deposition of hardfacing material within the groove will not cause substantial dilution by valve head material of the composition of the hardfacing material within the annular seating area.

An apparatus is provided for controlling the temperature of a first surface when the latter is frictionally engaged by a second surface and the surfaces are in relative motion. The apparatus includes a thermal sensing means having a first section exposed on one of the surfaces. The thermal sensing means has an exposed second section which is spaced from the surfaces. Means is provided for effecting relative movement of at least one surface while said surfaces are in frictional engagement. Means is also provided for effecting adjustment of the surfaces to a non-engaging relation. A detecting means is provided having a segment thereof in a predetermined temperature-detecting relation with the second section of the thermal sensing means and being operatively connected to the surface-adjusting means whereby relative positioning of at least one of the surfaces is responsive to the temperature detected by the detecting means segment from the second section of the thermal sensing means.
