A storage controller has an operating system (OS) and power control firmware configured to manage use of battery power during a power outage event. The OS specifies to the power control firmware first and second sets of physical components that should be shed by power control firmware during a two-phase vault process. Upon a power failure, the power control firmware turns off power to the first set of physical components and notifies the OS of the power failure. The OS determines whether to abort or continue the vault process. If the OS aborts the vault process, the power control firmware restores power to the first set of physical components. If the OS continues the vault process, the power control firmware turns off power to the second set of physical components, the OS saves application state, and moves all data from volatile memory to persistent memory.

Maintaining data integrity through power loss with operating system control

One or more aspects of the present disclosure relate to data protection techniques in response to power disruptions a power supply from a continuous power source for a storage device can be monitored. A power disruption event interrupting the power supply from the continuous power source can further be identified. In response to detecting an event, a storage system can be switched to a backup power supply, power consumption of one or more components of the storage device can be controlled based on information associated with each component and an amount of power available in the backup power supply. Further, one or more power interruption operations can be performed while the backup power supply includes sufficient power for performing the power interruption operations.

Power disruption data protection

Power conservation logic for a storage node operates in parallel with an emergency shutdown process in which an emergency power source is engaged and data and metadata are destaged from volatile memory to non-volatile managed drives. The power conservation logic serially implements power conservation actions until enough reserve power is available to complete the emergency shutdown process. The power conservation logic may learn how much power savings are realized from each conservation action and adjust the order in which the conservation actions are serially implemented, e.g. in order from greatest to least power consumption reduction.

Efficient storage system battery backup usage through dynamic implementation of power conservation actions

A data storage system includes compute engines each including a CPU complex, physical memory, interfaces to host computers and physical storage devices, and a fabric interface. A non-cache-coherent fabric interconnects the compute engines as cluster members of a cluster, the fabric supporting a global lock enabling each cluster member to obtain temporary exclusive access to addressable units of non-virtual memory. The CPU complexes implement a global virtual memory (GVM) on top of the non-virtual memory, including (1) a globally shared GVM page table of global page table entries, each identifying the cluster members having a corresponding GVM page mapped, and (2) GVM page management functionality including (i) use of the global lock to obtain exclusive access to the global page table entries for page management operations, and (ii) transfer of underlying data of the pages of the GVM among the cluster members.
