An electrical connector having a leadframe housing, a first electrical contact fixed in the leadframe housing, a second electrical contact fixed adjacent to the first electrical contact in the leadframe housing, and a third electrical contact fixed adjacent to the second electrical contact in the leadframe housing is disclosed. Each of the first and second electrical contacts may be selectively designated, while fixed in the lead frame housing, as either a ground contact or a signal contact such that, in a first designation, the first and second contacts form a differential signal pair, and, in a second designation, the second contact is a single-ended signal conductor. The third electrical contact may be a ground contact having a terminal end that extends beyond terminal ends of the first and second contacts.

Shieldless, high-speed electrical connectors

An electrical connector that includes first and second linear arrays of electrical contacts is disclosed. The first linear array includes a first differential signal pair, a first ground contact lead adjacent to the first differential signal pair, and a second ground contact lead adjacent to the first ground contact lead. The second linear array is positioned adjacent to the first linear array, and includes a second differential signal pair, a third ground contact lead adjacent to the second differential signal pair, and a fourth ground contact lead adjacent to the third ground contact lead. The electrical connector is devoid of electrical shields between the first linear array and the second linear array.

A mezzanine style electrical connector is disclosed. The connector includes first and second arrays of electrical contacts extending through a connector housing. Each contact array may include single ended signal conductors or differential signal pairs or a combination of both. The contact arrays are disposed adjacent to one another such that cross-talk between adjacent signal contacts is limited, even in the absence of any electrical shielding or ground contacts between the contact arrays.

High-density, low-noise, high-speed mezzanine connector

Methods for designing SMT connector footprints are disclosed. A circuit board may have disposed thereon an arrangement of SMT pads and corresponding vias. The arrangement of vias may differ from the arrangement of SMT pads. The arrangement of SMT pads may differ from the arrangement of contacts in a connector the footprint is designed to receive. The terminal ends of the contacts may be jogged or bent for electrical connection with the SMT pads. The SMT pads and vias may be arranged in a number of ways that increase signal contact density of the board, while limiting cross-talk and providing adequate impedance and routing space on the board. An interactive tool for designing such a footprint is disclosed.

High-frequency, high-signal-density, surface-mount technology footprint definitions

An electrical connector that includes first and second linear arrays of electrical contacts is disclosed. The first linear array is arranged in a first pattern of signal contacts and ground contacts. The second linear array is arranged in a second pattern of signal contacts and ground contacts that is different from the first pattern. The signal contacts define differential signal pairs. The signal contacts in the first linear array are elongated along a direction along which the first linear array extends.

An electrical connector that includes a linear array of electrical blade contacts is disclosed. Each contact may have a free-ended mating portion that extends from a mate surface of a dielectric base. The first linear array may include a first signal contact, a second signal contact positioned adjacent to the first signal contact and forming a differential signal pair therewith, and a ground contact positioned adjacent to the second signal contact. The first signal contact, the second signal contact, and the ground contact may each be elongated in a direction along the linear array.

Lightweight, low-cost, high-density electrical connectors are disclosed that provide impedance-controlled, high-speed, low-interference communications, even in the absence of shields between the contacts, and that provide for a variety of other benefits not found in prior art connectors. An example of such an electrical connector may include a first signal contact positioned within a first linear array of electrical contacts and a second signal contact positioned within a second linear array of electrical contacts that is adjacent to the first linear array. Either of the signal contacts may be a single-ended signal conductor, or one of a differential signal pair. The connector may be devoid of shields between the signal contacts, and of ground contacts adjacent to the signal contacts.

Cross talk reduction and impedance matching for high speed electrical connectors

A preferred embodiment of a modular electrical connector includes a plug having a printed circuit board, a contact finger positioned on a portion of the printed circuit board, and a housing for supporting and constraining the printed circuit board so that the portion of the printed circuit board extends from the housing. The printed circuit board has a flexible portion that permits the portion of the printed circuit board to translate in relation to the housing. The modular electrical connector also includes a receptacle for mating with the plug and having a first contact for electrically contacting the contact finger when the plug and the receptacle are mated, and a housing having a slot formed therein for receiving the portion of the printed circuit board when the plug and the receptacle are mated.

Cross-talk reduction in high speed electrical connectors

Lightweight, low cost, high density electrical connectors are disclosed that provide impedance controlled, high-speed, low interference communications, even in the absence of shields between the contacts, and that provide for a variety of other benefits not found in prior art connectors, such as low insertion loss. Signal contacts and ground contacts within the connectors can be scaled and positioned relative to one another such that a differential signal in a first differential signal pair produces a high field in the gap between the contacts that form the signal pair and a low field near an adjacent signal pair. Consequently, cross talk between adjacent signal contacts can be limited to acceptable levels for the particular application. In such connectors, the level of cross talk between adjacent signal contacts can be limited to the point that the need for (and cost of) shields between adjacent contacts is unnecessary, even in high speed, high signal integrity applications.

Cross talk reduction and impedance-matching for high speed electrical connectors

A high speed electrical connector configured to reduce the incidence of cross-talk is disclosed. The connector includes a connector housing and a plurality of columns of differential contact pairs and ground contacts. Each column of differential contact pairs and ground contacts is offset from an adjacent column such that multi-active cross-talk is reduced with respect to each differential contact pair.

Cross-talk canceling technique for high speed electrical connectors

An electrical connector system, comprising: an electrical connector; a plurality of wires extending from the connector and arranged in a plurality of twisted pairs; and an insert separating the wires defining each of the twisted pairs. A method of reducing cross-talk in an electrical connector system that produces an unwanted cross-talk, comprising the steps of: providing an electrical connector with a plurality of wires extending therefrom and arranged in a plurality of twisted pairs; providing an insert; placing the insert between the wires defining each of the twisted pairs. The insert causes the wires to produce a compensating cross-talk that offsets the unwanted cross-talk. A method of using an electrical connector that exhibits an acceptable level of cross-talk within a desired frequency range, comprising the steps of: providing an electrical connector system that is unable to exhibit the acceptable level of cross-talk within the desired frequency range, the system including: an electrical connector; and a plurality of wires extending from the connector and arranged in a plurality of twisted pairs; separating the wires defining each of the twisted pairs; and operating the connector system within the desired frequency range. As a result, the connector system exhibits the desired level of cross-talk.

Electrical connector system with low cross-talk

An electrical-connector system includes an electrical connector having a plurality of upper signal contacts arranged in at least two rows of vertically-aligned pairs. A plurality of tails electrically couple the upper signal contacts to a circuit substrate. The upper tails have a predetermined length and are spaced apart by one or more predetermined distances so that the upper tails produce a compensating cross-talk. The compensating cross-talk offsets a cross-talk produced by the upper signal contacts. The electrical-connector system also includes a plurality of lower signal contacts electrically coupled to the substrate. The lower signal contacts are substantially located between the upper signal contacts and the circuit substrate.

Double-deck electrical connector with cross-talk compensation

An RJ series modular jack receptacle. The receptacle could comprise: a housing having a mating face and a circuit substrate engaging face; first and second openings in the mating face, arranged in stacked relation, the height of the housing being less than about 0.9 inch; and contact terminals in each of the openings positioned to mate with mating RJ series plugs inserted into the openings. The receptacle could also comprise: a housing with first and second openings, contact terminals in the first opening; and contact terminals in the second opening positioned relative to the contact terminals in the first opening so as to produce an acceptable level of cross-talk therebetween, such as &minus;40 dB. The receptacle could comprise: a housing with first and second openings; and contact terminals. Adjacent contact terminals maintain a centerline distance, and the offset between the first opening and the second opening is a function of the centerline distance of the contact terminals.

Low profile double deck connector with improved cross talk isolation

An electrical connector system with an electrical connector having signal contacts exhibiting unwanted cross-talk; and a circuit substrate engaging the connector. The substrate has a plurality of layers and at least first, second and third traces, each corresponding to a respective signal contact. The first trace includes: a first portion on at least one of the layers and adjacent a portion of the second trace in order to produce a first compensating cross-talk; a second portion on at least another of the plurality of layers and adjacent a portion of the third trace in order to produce a second compensating cross-talk. The substrate could also comprise a board having a first layer, a second layer, a plurality of inner layers between said first and second layers, and a ground plane on at least a lower surface of said board. The inner layers have at least first, second and third traces, with the first trace having portions adjacent the second and third traces in order to produce a first and a second compensating cross-talk, respectively. The system reduces unwanted cross-talk by introducing a first compensating cross-talk by inductively and capacitively coupling a first conductor and a second conductor adjacent the first conductor; and introducing a second compensating cross-talk by capacitively coupling the first conductor and a third conductor once removed from the first conductor. The compensating cross-talks offset the unwanted cross-talk to produce an acceptable cross-talk.
