Chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) systems comprising apparatus and methods which allow the physical and chemical characteristics of a CMP slurry to be monitored during the polishing process, both on the pad and in the fresh slurry, are provided. The methods and apparatus of the invention also furnish the CMP operator with real-time information about the polishing process, which can provide insight into various chemical and physical mechanisms involved in chemical-mechanical polishing. The data provided by the sensors also make available valuable information about the stability and reproducibility of the particular CMP process being observed.

CMP sensor and control system

The invention is directed to a method for polishing a surface comprising tungsten carbide, comprising contacting a surface comprising tungsten carbide with an oxidizing agent, a polishing component, and a liquid carrier, and abrading at least a portion of the surface to polish the surface. The invention further provides a method for reconditioning a workpiece comprising tungsten carbide. The invention also provides a cutting tool insert having a highly polished surface.

Method of polishing a tungsten carbide surface

The invention is directed to a method for polishing a cutting edge on a cutting instrument, comprising contacting a cutting edge of a cutting instrument with a polishing pad and a chemical-mechanical polishing composition comprising particles of an abrasive, and a liquid carrier, wherein the abrasive is suspended in the liquid carrier, and abrading at least a portion of the cutting edge to polish the cutting edge. The invention further provides a cutting instrument having a highly uniform edge.

Method of sharpening cutting edges

An element-doped diamond crystal is disclosed herein. The crystal includes at least one dopant element which has a greater concentration toward or near an outermost surface of the crystal than in the center of the crystal. The concentration of the dopant element is at a local minimum at least about 5 micrometers below the surface. The concentration-profile of the dopant element for these diamond crystals causes an expansion of the diamond lattice, thereby generating tangential compressive stresses at the surface of the diamond crystal. These stresses beneficially increase the compressive fracture strength of the diamond.

An interference coating ( ) for reflecting both visible light and a portion of the region of the infrared spectrum is disclosed. The coating includes a dichroic structure of a plurality of layers of a material having a low index of refraction and a plurality of layers of a material having a high index of refraction. The coating has an average spectral high reflectance of at least 80% for wavelengths in the visible light section of the electromagnetic spectrum and of at least 50% for wavelengths in a portion of the infrared section of the electromagnetic spectrum at least 150 nm wide.

Broad spectrum reflective coating for an electric lamp

An improved thermal barrier coating for metal substrates such as superalloys is disclosed. The coating is a slurry composition, comprising spheres of zirconia, at least some of which are hollow, contained within a porous oxide matrix, such as aluminosilicate. The slurry composition can be applied by slurry casting or similar techniques to the desired surface. Coating methods are also described. In general, they involve the application of successive layers of variations of the slurry composition, with various curing techniques used between layers and after the final coating is applied. Another embodiment of this invention embraces a composite coating, comprising (i) an oxide matrix phase; (ii) zirconia spheres embedded in the oxide matrix; and (iii) a porous phase.

Coating composition for metal-based substrates, and related processes

An improved thermal barrier coating for metal substrates such as superalloys is provided. The coating is a slurry composition, comprising spheres of zirconia, at least some of which are hollow, contained within a porous oxide matrix, such as aluminosilicate. The slurry composition can be applied by slurry casting or similar techniques to the desired surface. Coating methods involve the application of successive layers of variations of the slurry composition, with various curing techniques used between layers and after the final coating is applied. Another embodiment of this invention embraces a composite coating, comprising (i) an oxide matrix phase; (ii) zirconia spheres embedded in the oxide matrix; and (iii) a porous phase.

An insect abatement system prevents adhesion of insect debris to surfaces which must be kept substantially free of insect debris. An article is coated with an insect abatement coating comprising polyorganosiloxane with a Shore A hardness of less than 50 and a tensile strength of less than 4 MPa. A method for preventing the adhesion of insect debris to surfaces includes the step of applying an insect abatement coating to a surface which must be kept substantially free of insect debris.

Insect abatement system

Insect debris is removed from or prevented from adhering to insect impingement areas of an aircraft, particularly on an inlet cowl of an engine, by heating the area to 180.degree.-500.degree. C. An apparatus comprising a means to bring hot air from the aircraft engine to a plenum contiguous to the insect impingement area provides for the heating of the insect impingement areas to the required temperatures. The plenum can include at least one tube with a plurality of holes contained in a cavity within the inlet cowl. It can also include an envelope with a plurality of holes on its surface contained in a cavity within the inlet cowl.

Aircraft anti-insect system

A method for treating as as-grown chemical vapor deposited (CVD) starting diamond film having stresses and containing voids, comprises the step of subjecting the diamond film to a temperature of above about 1000.degree. C. and a hydrostatic pressure of above about 3 kilobars.

Method for enhancing the toughness of CVD diamond

In its broadest aspects, the present invention is directed to a method for improving the abrasion resistance of the annular interior surface of an annulus. Such method comprises the steps of (a) placing said annulus heated to an elevated CVD diamond-forming temperature in a vacuum chamber held under reduced pressure; (b) providing a hydrocarbon/hydrogen gaseous mixture within said chamber; (c) at least partially decomposing said gaseous mixture in said chamber; and (d) directing said at least partially decomposed gaseous mixture into said heated annular interior for diamond deposition/growth to occur on said annular interior surface. As noted above, spray nozzles, valves, injectors, wire drawing dies, and like annular products are ideally suited for use in accordance with the precepts of the present invention.

CVD diamond coating annulus components and method of their fabrication

A method produces a columnar, quasi-oriented diamond that exhibits the enhanced optical, thermal and mechanical properties of gem diamonds. This method allows diamond growth rates that are faster than those possible with high pressure diamond growth from a single diamond seed. The columnar, quasi-oriented diamond contains lower grain boundary density than chemically vapor deposited diamond.

Synthetic diamond product

Carbon fluoride solid compositions having a low fluorine-to-carbon ratio are produced by chemical vapor deposition processes. These carbon fluoride compositions have improved wettability characteristics over polytetrafluoroethylene. These compositions can be used as films, coatings on substrates, powders, and stand-alone articles. These carbon fluoride compositions are produced by energizing vapors comprised of compounds containing fluorine and carbon to cause them to degrade into fragments which are then condensed onto a substrate to form the carbon fluoride solids. These vapors can be energized by a variety of techniques, including hot filament techniques. The carbon fluoride solids find utility as films in aircraft de-icing, cookware, appliances, surgical tooling, chemical processing, gaskets, seals, diaphragms, packings, valve seats, windings, mold release components, extruder coatings, medical prosthetics, and other similar non-wetting applications.

Carbon fluoride compositions

Superconducting joints between superconducting tape ends are produced by a series of operations which includes stripping non-superconductive material from the tape ends, joining them with a conductive coating and depositing a superconductive alloy layer thereon, typically of triniobium tin, by a chemical vapor deposition reaction of hydrogen with the corresponding metal halides. Certain of the steps are performed in an inert atmosphere free from moisture, elemental hydrogen and elemental oxygen, typically a helium atmosphere.
