A rotary cutting tool is provided having an axis of rotation, a shank section, a fluted section, and a plurality of helical teeth. The shank section and the fluted section both extend along the axis of rotation. The fluted section has a first end integrally attached to the shank section, a second end, and an outer surface extending between the first and second ends. A plurality of helical teeth is disposed along the outer surface, each having a cutting edge and an undulating geometry. The helical teeth are arranged so that rotationally successive cutting edges are sufficiently dissimilar relative to one another to inhibit a detrimental periodic response in the rotary cutting tool.

An end mill is provided having an axis of rotation, a shank section and a fluted section, each extending along the axis of rotation, and a plurality of helical teeth. The fluted section has a first end attached to the shank section and a second end. The plurality of helical teeth is disposed within the fluted section. Each helical tooth has a cutting edge, a relief surface, a cutting surface, and an edge preparation surface. The edge preparation surface is contiguous with the cutting edge of the respective tooth.

A rotary cutting tool with a longitudinal axis is provided that includes a shank portion, a cutting portion, and a plurality of chip-breaking features. The cutting portion, which extends out from the shank portion, includes a length, a plurality of blades and a plurality of flutes. The blades and flutes extend substantially all of the length of the cutting portion. Each blade includes a leading face side, a trailing face side, and a land surface that extends between the leading face side and the trailing face side. The plurality of chip-breaking features are disposed in the land surfaces of the blades, and non-uniformly distributed among the blades.

An end mill is provided that includes a shank section and a fluted section. One or more helical teeth are disposed along an outer surface of the fluted section. Each helical tooth has a cutting surface and a relief wall that intersect to form an angle defining a helical cutting edge. The cutting surface of each helical tooth includes a first section, a second section, and a take-off peak disposed between the first section and second section. The cutting edge of each helical tooth includes a first portion having a first constant angle, and a second portion having a second constant angle unequal to the first constant angle, and an arcuate transition section connecting the first portion and second portion. Some embodiments of the present invention include more portions than the aforesaid first and second portions.

A rotary cutting end mill is provided. The end mill includes a shank section and a fluted section. The fluted section has a first end integrally attached to the shank section, a second end, and an outer surface. One or more helical teeth are disposed along the outer surface of the fluted section. Each helical tooth has a cutting surface and a relief wall that intersect to form an angle defining a helical cutting edge. The helical cutting edge defines an outer circumferential cutting path. The cutting surface includes first, second, and third sections, and first and second take-off peaks. The first take-off peak is disposed between the first section and second section. The second take-off peak is disposed between the second section and the third section.

Tools, including end mills, include a flute having a helix which varies along the length of the tool. The invention is not limited in terms of the number of flutes, whether odd or even; helix change(s) within a flute or between flutes; or indexing between cutting edges or flutes. Nor is the invention limited in terms of materials used, and may employ carbide or high-speed steel grades of materials, ceramics, or any other material that will be used in the future for material removal in a rotary tool. According to the invention, a 'slow' or 'high' helix may be used at the end or starting point of the tool, depending upon the application. A slow helix at the end or starting point is desirable for a strong corner in ramping and plunging into the material. When a higher helix is used at the end transitioning to a smaller helix at the shank, the corner is also protected because of the helix change. The high helix at the tip may be needed for shearing action in a given material.

An improved end milling tool effective to reduce forces produced in ramp cutting comprises a plurality of end cutting edges, and a plurality of side cutting edges, each end cutting edge lying parallel to a radius of the tool tip and intersecting a side cutting edge at the periphery of the tool tip, and each end cutting edge comprising a peripheral end edge portion and an interior edge portion, the peripheral end edge portion sloping relatively shallowly from the tip periphery towards the shank portion of the tool, and the interior edge portion sloping relatively steeply from the peripheral edge portion towards the shank portion.
