A chassis includes a flash module comprising a cover and an integrated connector, a metal stiffener, an electromagnetic interference (EMI) gasket, and a midplane. The flash module is connected to the midplane using the integrated connector, the integrated connector extends past the cover of the flash module, and, when the flash module is connected to the midplane, the cover of the flash module is in direct contact with the EMI gasket, in which the metal stiffener is interposed between the EMI gasket and the midplane.

A fan assembly for an electronic device is provided. The assembly comprises a fan housing, at least one bracket member, and at least one retention peg. The fan housing defines a recess therein for directing heat away from a electrical components positioned within the electronic device. The bracket member supports the fan housing within the electronic device. The retention peg is disposed about the bracket member and includes a plurality of ribs for insertion into the recess to retain the bracket member to the fan housing.

The fan is arranged to blow air across the electronic components mounted on the printed circuit board. The handling device is disposed in a path of airflow of the fan. In a chassis for holding drawers containing computer components or the like, accurate alignment of each drawer in its corresponding slot is provided by a plurality of alignment features along an edge of an opening for the drawer. Mating alignment features are provided in each drawer, that engage with the alignment features on the chassis to ensure alignment of the drawer in the chassis. Various different types of alignment features are provided. Mating alignment features may additionally be provided along an opposing edge of the chassis and drawers. After being aligned, the drawers may be fastened to the chassis in a conventional fashion.

An expansion enclosure allows additional expansion cards to be used with a computer system. The enclosure exhibits a small footprint (e.g., one rack unit, or 1&#xbe; inches) for installation in a rack or other area in which space is limited. The enclosure accepts one or more (e.g., four) expansion cards, which are connected to a removable expansion card cage. The removable cage forms part of the structure of the enclosure and provides strength and rigidity. A stabilizer may be removably but securely installed in the enclosure to stabilize or hold the removable cage as a card is installed in or removed from the cage.

An EMI reduction element and a protection element are provided with an electrical component. The electrical component has a distal end, and the EMI reduction element has a height and a distal side. The EMI reduction element is secured to the electrical component. The protection element includes a middle portion that has a maximum height. The maximum height is based on the height of the EMI reduction element, and is preferably about 30% to about 50% of the reduction element height. The protection element is secured to the electrical component and is positioned adjacent to the EMI reduction element so that the middle portion is closer to the distal end of the electrical component than the distal side of the EMI reduction element. The protection element protects the reduction element from being sheared and/or torn by walls of an enclosure that the electrical component can be inserted into.

An apparatus and method for selectably including a mass storage device in an expansion card space of a computer system, particularly an expansion card area lacking a space dedicated solely for the mass storage device. An apparatus according to the invention includes a mass storage frame, and an interface board to couple the mass storage device to an expansion card slot on backplane in the computer system. A computer system includes the apparatus. Another computer system includes a removable support frame for supporting a mass storage device, the removal of which allows a larger expansion card or an additional expansion card to be inserted into the backplane.

Apparatus and method for selectably including a mass storage device in a selectable space of a computer system

A computer system comprising a chassis and housing removable servers supported in subchassis, each chassis having optional front or read cable access. Power and signal connectivity to the servers may be made from the front or rear of the system. The subchassis may be half the width of the chassis or a quarter of a width of the chassis. The subchassis further include an upper bay and a lower bay as well as a plurality of field replaceable units, which all may be access through the front of the chassis. One or more of the field replaceable units connect to the system through a midplane, located within the subchassis.

A computer system including a highly efficient forced air cooling subsystem is disclosed. The computer system includes an enclosure having a first (e.g., front) panel, a processor mounted upon a motherboard located within the enclosure, and a fan located within the enclosure for providing a flow of air through the enclosure. The fan draws air into the enclosure through an opening (e.g., an intake vent) in the first panel and produces a pressurized stream of air. The fan may be oriented such that the pressurized stream of air is directed toward the processor. The computer system may also include a plenum adjacent to the first panel, wherein the intake vent allows ambient air surrounding the enclosure to enter the plenum. The fan may be mounted within an opening in a wall of the plenum. The enclosure may also include a second (e.g., rear) panel opposed to the first (e.g., front) panel and having three openings (e.g., exhaust vents) therein. A first portion of the pressurized stream of air may flow across the processor and exit through a first exhaust vent. A second portion of the pressurized stream of air may flow through a power supply located within the enclosure and exit through a second exhaust vent. A third portion of the pressurized stream of air may flow through a space within the enclosure reserved for option cards and exit the enclosure through a third exhaust vent.

A computer housing which includes a chassis that has a first compartment and a second compartment. The first compartment includes a first electronic assembly and a first fan that creates a flow of air through the compartment to create a compartment pressure that is less than an ambient pressure. The second compartment contains a second electronic assembly and a second fan which produces a flow of air that creates pressure within the compartment that is greater than the ambient pressure. The housing also contains an inner wall which separates the first compartment from the second compartment to inhibit air flow between the compartments.

PCI cards are plugged into vertical risers, the lower edges of which have been plugged into a motherboard. This involves a considerable force being applied to the riser card, both during insertion and removal, and may damage the card or the underlying motherboard. A support for the top edge of the riser card clips onto the upper end thereof. Rearward extensions of the support are gripped by tabs struck out of a wall of the enclosure.

Computers are manufactured with connectors in which are inserted at least one PCI expansion card to increase the capacity of the computer. A computer enclosure panel is formed with an opening for insertion and withdrawal of the card. The card has a cover which blocks the opening after the card has been plugged in. The invention provides a retainer mounted on the rear panel which, when projected, engages the cover to assist in holding the card in place. The slide has a detent which is manually disengaged in order to slide the cover to retracted position. It further provides room for the tab conventionally extending outward of the card so that the card may be located closer to the side panel, thereby conserving space within the enclosure. Computers as shipped from the factory many times are not provided with PCI cards and the opening is blocked by a removable blanking cover. The slide also holds the blanking cover in position.
