A set of programming macros implement bit-fields in a variable, such as an unsigned integer structure having a bit-field definition number associated with each bit-field. The bit-field definition numbers have a value that defines the associated bit-field in terms of its end bits. In various embodiments, the macros extract the end bits from the value of the structure elements to form mask and shift values with which to manipulate the bit-fields.

Compiler independent bit-field macros

An IC design is tested on a workstation through a hardware simulator. The workstation includes a co-verification software tool that executes IC firmware to operate the IC design and test the IC design and IC firmware. The co-verification software tool further operates to supply test stimuli to the IC design and to receive responses for analysis. The test stimuli are written in a programming language, which permits ease of testing and analysis of the IC design.

Application of co-verification tools to the testing of IC designs

A virtual monitor controller includes a data storage device coupled to receive and output data; an instruction storage device coupled to receive and output instructions; a status storage device coupled to receive and output status data; and a mode storage device coupled to receive and output mode data. The virtual monitor controller is included in a debugger/monitor controller. A debugger/monitor system comprises a host system; the debugger/monitor controller; and a digital processor. Preferably, the controller is coupled between the processor and IC logic. A method of operating a virtual monitor comprises the steps of intercepting an instruction fetch from a microprocessor; downloading instructions from a host computer; and operating the microprocessor with the instructions. Preferably, the instructions are sequentially downloaded.
