A die for crimping an electrical terminal onto a wire lead. This includes a base with a terminal support structure for supporting and feeding a strip of terminals to a crimp station overlying an anvil. Punch means are provided over the anvil adapted to move in contact with a terminal at the crimp station to form with the anvil an electrical connection between the wire lead and terminal. The anvil is supported on a resilient cantilever beam member which deflects during the crimping operation.

A method of making a multilayered circuit assembly from a plurality of flat, flexible circuit elements, wherein each circuit element includes a substrate having conductive means to define an electrical path of travel which is formed between a base layer made of insulation material and a cover layer made of insulation material. Each circuit element has a connecting station associated with the conductive means. The method generally includes the steps of forming the conductive means on the base layer of each circuit element, punching a first opening through the conductive means and base layer at a connecting station of each circuit element, soldering the connecting station of each circuit element so that a solid solder pad fills the first opening whereby the solder electrically contacts the conductive means, punching a second opening through the cover layer of each circuit element, securing the cover layer of each circuit element over the base layer and conductive means so that the first opening is generally concentric with the second opening, punching a third opening in each circuit element through the solder pad, stacking a plurality of punched and soldered circuit elements on top of one another so that the third openings are generally concentric, inserting a terminal into the third openings of the stacked circuit elements so that a portion thereof contacts the solder, and staking the terminal so that the other surface thereof forms a cold weld interference fit against the solder.

A zero insertion force connector assembly includes a pair of connector housings each including an array of terminals. As the housings are initially moved together, the terminals are not in engagement and zero insertion force is provided. The housings are subsequently moved transversely with respect to one another in order to close individual pairs of terminals. Each terminal includes a contact blade parallel to the contact blade of another terminal, and the blades are disposed at a forty-five degree angle relative to the direction of transverse housing movement. One blade of each contact pair is supported along one of its edges to provide for a twisting action and reliable electrical contact as the blades are engaged. Transverse movement of the housings is effected by an actuator member mounted on one housing by an integral hinge and movable to a latched position wherein it forces the other housing member to a transverse position thereby closing each of the individual pairs of contacts.

Zero insertion force connector assembly

An insulation piercing terminal for use with insulation clad wire. The terminal includes a contact portion and a wire gripping portion that is adapted to be crimped onto the wire. The wire gripping portion includes a central elongated wire supporting area defining the bottom support for the wire and a pair of insulation piercing wings having sharp ends. The piercing wings extend outwardly in opposite directions from the wire supporting area around half the wire and meet in the location on top of the wire where they pierce the insulation at the top location so that the ends of the wings extend downwardly into and contact the wire and then bottom on the wire supporting area. A method of crimping the above terminal onto the wire including the steps of providing a flat conductive blank, placing the insulation clad wire on the wire supporting area, forming each piercing wing around half the wire so that the ends thereof meet at a location on top of the wire, curling the piercing wings so that the ends thereof point generally downwardly toward the wire supporting area, and inserting the ends of the wings into the wire through the insulation until they bottom on the wire supporting area.

A push-type terminal connector assembly including a terminal housing made of insulating material and with a terminal receiving receptacle adapted to receive a plurality of terminals and a plurality of like terminals each adapted to be plugged into the terminal receiving receptacle. The housing has a plurality of channels formed in the receptacle for transversely dividing the receptacle into a plurality of adjacent terminal receiving stations. A detent ridge is provided in the interior of the receptacle and is adapted to engage a portion of the terminal for positioning and holding the terminal at a receiving station at a given depth. Each terminal includes a lateral compressible contact spring adapted to electrically connect and press against the contact springs of another terminal plugged in an adjacent receiving station. Each terminal also includes stop tangs and a detent spring for cooperation with the detent ridge so that the detent ridge is captured therebetween for positioning and holding the terminal in the receptacle at a given depth.
