A method for applying an image onto a recording medium includes applying a first layer of a radiation-curable ink onto a recording medium; curing the first layer; and applying at least a second layer of radiation-curable ink on top of the first cured layer. The coverage of the first layer is 1.0 g/m2 or less. The first layer of ink is applied onto the recording medium by applying a first ink from an ink set and the second layer is applied by applying at least the first ink from the ink set.

The present invention relates to a method for applying an image onto a recording medium. Using the method according to the present invention, images may be printed having a predetermined gloss. The method further enables to make prints having local differences in gloss level. The present invention further relates to an ink-jet printing apparatus.

A printing method for printing a digital image on a substantially flat substrate includes providing the digital image including a raster of a plurality of pixels; providing a height channel to the digital image defining a height for each pixel; discriminating in the digital image for each pixel a relief part, a white part and a skin part; providing an inking mask including a binary image of areas of the substrate to be finished and areas of the substrate not to be finished; image processing of the digital image by applying the inking mask to the image, wherein the height of a pixel within an area of the substrate to be finished is reduced by substantially reducing a height of the relief part of said pixel; and printing the processed image obtained in the image processing step on the substrate.

A printing system for printing a fluid includes a print head for ejecting droplets of the fluid; a first fluid storing section for storing a first amount of the fluid; a second fluid storing section for storing a second amount of the fluid, the second fluid storing section being in fluid communication to the pressure chamber in a power down situation; and a pre-tension device configured for arranging the second amount of the fluid in a pre-tension state in the second fluid storing section, thereby providing a positive fluid pressure on the nozzle in a power down situation, which positive fluid pressure is selected such that a third amount of fluid passes through the nozzle in response to said positive fluid pressure and forms a film on the nozzle plate. The printing system according to the invention supports the recovery of the print head after a power down situation.
