A method for bonding plastic to a metallic member is described which comprises the steps of forming a preselected pattern of etched cavities in the metallic surface to be bonded, which cavities at least in part increase in width with depth of etching, and subsequently applying a plastic layer to the metallic surface so that a portion of the applied plastic layer fills the cavities and form an interlock with the metallic surface.

Method for bonding plastic to metal

A method and apparatus for simulating a chemical warfare attack includes the use of a radiant energy transmitting device for radiating energy in a pattern which simulates different types and forms of chemical agents. In its simplest embodiment, a signal strength above a predetermined level may represent a lethal dosage of the selected agent. Protective devices, such as gas masks, protective clothing, or structures, are provided with sensors for determining whether the protective device is properly employed. A receiver associated with each individual detects the presence and character of the radiated signal, and circuit means responsive to both the sensor and the output of the receiver provides an output indicating whether the individual has properly employed the protective device in a timely manner after a simulated chemical attack has been initiated.

Chemical warfare simulator

An improved device for a smoke obscuration munition includes a thin-walled erosol can body. A sealed central burster tube is affixed to and extends into the sealed payload within the device. The payload consists of a slurry contained in the annular space outside the burster which includes a highly volatile, low density, low surface tension hydrocarbon liquid and a obscuration agent as the payload.

An out-of-line fuse for primarily ring-type, multiple point concurrent initiation, projectiles is disclosed. In the unarmed state, the detonator and booster charges are angularly displaced while located at the same radial distance from the projectile axis in adjacent radial planes. When rotation of the projectile is sensed by a plurality of centrifugally actuated fiber optic light switches arranged in a series optical relationship, an electrically activated pyrotechnic thruster is fired to move the detonator charges and the booster charges into alignment arming the projectile; the electrical circuit having been priorly energized by inertia switches sensing the thrust forces during the launching of the projectile. When rotation of the projectile substantially ceases the detonator charges are electrically fired.

Munition fuse system having out-of-line safety device

The deflection, due to inertia, of the free end of the cantilever rod of fiber optic material is an indication of the acceleration of the supporting structure of the rod. The indication of the deflection of the rod is by detecting light propagating the free end of the rod. Disclosed are fiber optic rod sensing element structures for acceleration indicators, a rate of change of acceleration indicator, a rotation indicator, and a latching acceleration indicator.

Disclosed is an inertia activated power source in which the moving element is typically a mercury cell shearing a restraining wire at a predetermined G force. The moving cell is then caught between two spring contacts that extend exterior the case providing electrical terminals. Once activated, a spring latch locks the cell in place between the contacts. The action of the spring contacts materially reduces the shock on the battery when the device is subjected to forces many times greater than the desired activation source for the power source.

Inertia activated electrical power source

An aerosol can is dispensed through an electrically isolated screen from a fixed distance which induces a charge on the screen from the passing cloud. The charge is conducted by wire into a capacitor where the charge builds up and is measured as a voltage by means of a high impedance voltmeter.

A chaff cartridge is made up of a plurality of chaff interpackets contained in subprojectiles. The subprojectiles are each provided with fins and the fins of each subprojectile in a chaff cartridge provide a different drag to cause the spacing out of the subprojectiles. The fins, additionally, cause the subprojectiles to rotate and thereby radially disperse the chaff.

Dispersive subprojectiles for chaff cartridges

A shaped-charge projectile having a cylindrical chamber containing a main charge, a fluted liner projecting into the chamber and means causing the liner to expand upon impact with a target and prior to firing of the main charge to thereby increase the penetrating power of the projectile. According to one aspect the means comprises a pyrotechnic material located within the liner, according to a second aspect the means comprises a ram driven into the liner and according to a third aspect the means comprises a plurality of rigid rods fixed to the flutes of the liner.

Armor penetration shaped-charge projectile

A projectile housing. A body of pyrotechnic material in the housing. A delay casing containing fusing material fixed to the housing fabricated of a material that looses its structural integrity in response to the heat of a fuze flame front, whereby upon impact of the projectile the casing separates permitting the burning fuze material to come in contact with and ignite the pyrotechnic. There is further provided means to release the casing from the housing upon premature or short range impact prior to the ignition of the fusing material contained therein.

Impact actuated projectile fuze

Bundles of chaff fibers are fed into a rotating preacceleration chamber having a diverging outlet. The chaff fibers are rotated with the preacceleration chamber and are forced radially outward by centrifugal force. A feed mechanism forces the rotating chaff fibers toward the diverging outlet from which they are propelled outwardly at a high velocity and at an angle almost orthogonal to the rotational axis of the chaff dispenser.
