Embodiments of the invention include an optical power splitting module apparatus. The module apparatus includes at least one input port, one or more multi-fiber output ports, and an optical fiber-splitter device coupled therebetween. The optical splitter device has a first end configured as at least one single optical fiber, and a second end configured as one or more multi-fiber groups. The first end of the splitter device is coupled to the input port and the second end of the splitter device is coupled to the output ports. The first end of the splitter device is, e.g., an LC connector. The second end of the splitter device is, e.g., one or more Multi-fiber Push On (MPO) connectors. The optical splitter device is, e.g., a 1&#xd7;N planar lightwave circuit (PLC) splitter, such as a 1&#xd7;32 PLC splitter with an LC input connector and four 8-fiber MPO output connectors.

Embodiments of the invention include an apparatus and system for managing and radially distributing optical fibers from a first location, such as a central office, to a plurality of destination locations, such as homes within a neighborhood. The apparatus includes a distribution panel having a central hub or ring, and both a plurality of optical input elements and a plurality of optical output elements disposed radially around the central hub. The optical input elements split the fibers coupled from the first location into a plurality of individual fibers that are routed to the central hub. The central hub radially distributes the plurality of fibers to appropriate optical output elements, which are coupled to destination fibers routed to the plurality of destination locations. The radial configuration of the apparatus provides a central breakout point for fiber distribution, thus improving fiber organization and routing management compared to conventional routing and distribution systems.

Embodiments of the invention include a universal apparatus for incorporating intelligence into the distribution frame of an optical communication system. The communication system includes a distribution frame with one or more distribution shelves having one or more interconnection panels, and a universal operations, administration and maintenance (OA&M) apparatus attached to the distribution frame. The OA&M apparatus, which is operably connected to the interconnection panels and the distribution frame's system controller through an interface, monitors current interconnection panel connections including cross-connections and can indicate future possible cross-connections between interconnection panels. The OA&M apparatus also is useful for jumper routing, circuit administration, and other features associated with the distribution frame and its fiber connections.

A system for cross-connecting network elements of different types through a common universal media. In the system, a media conversion interface is electrically connected to a network element. This media conversion interface passively maps the connector and cable type of the network element to a universal connector type. This media conversion interface is electrically connected to a cross-connect module in a universal distribution frame. This electrical connection uses a universal cable group and universal connectors. This cross-connect module is connected to another cross-connect module, also in a universal distribution frame, using a universal cable group and universal connectors. This second cross-connect module is electrically connected to a second media conversion interface, using a universal cable group and universal connectors. This second media conversion interface is electrically connected to a second network element, and passively maps the connector and cable type of the second network element to the universal connector.
