An internal combustion engine has a cylinder with a combustion chamber and a piston supported reciprocatingly in the cylinder and delimiting the combustion chamber. A crankcase is connected to the cylinder and a crankshaft is rotatably supported therein. The piston is operatively connected to the crankshaft so as to drive the crankshaft in rotation. A transfer passage provides flow communication between crankcase interior and combustion chamber when the piston is at bottom dead center. The transfer passage has a port opening connecting the transfer passage to the crankcase interior and has a transfer port connecting the transfer passage to the combustion chamber. A fuel supply device supplies fuel into the transfer passage at a location between the transfer port and the port opening. The transfer passage has a connecting opening and is connected to the crankcase interior at the connecting opening. A control element controls the connecting opening.

Internal combustion engine and method for its operation

An internal combustion engine has an intake channel which opens via a first valve into a crankcase of the engine. The first valve opens at a first frequency (f). The engine has a second valve, which controls the quantity of fuel supplied into the intake channel. The quantity of fuel is controlled by controlling the time interval during which the second valve is open during each engine cycle (x). A control device is provided to control the quantity of fuel supplied. In a first operating state, the second valve is opened at a second frequency (f, f, f) which is coordinated with the first frequency (f). In a second operating state, the second valve is opened independently of the first frequency (f).

Method for operating an internal combustion engine

A work implement has an internal combustion engine that drives a tool of the work implement via a clutch. The clutch has at least one driving element which is operatively connected to the internal combustion engine and at least one output element which is operatively connected to the tool. The internal combustion engine has a starting device with a starting position and an operating position. To avoid unintentional rotation of the output element when starting the internal combustion engine, the work implement has a blocking device with a detent pawl. In an actuated position, the detent pawl projects into the movement path of the output element, limiting the rotation of the output element. In an unactuated position, the detent pawl releases the output element. The starting device has an actuating device which, in the starting position, keeps the detent pawl in the actuated position.

Work implement with an internal combustion engine

A portable, handheld work apparatus such as a chain saw has a handle () to guide the work apparatus () and has an air-cooled, mixture-lubricated combustion engine () arranged in a casing as a drive for a work tool (). The cylinder () has a combustion chamber () formed therein to which an air/fuel mixture is supplied. The air/fuel mixture is ignited by a spark plug () which projects into the combustion chamber (). An ignition control () triggers a spark in dependence on the angular position of the crankshaft (). A temperature sensor () is provided to control the cylinder temperature. The temperature signal of the temperature sensor () is connected to a power control (). When a predetermined temperature is exceeded, the power control () changes the operating parameters of the combustion engine () in such a manner that the power of the combustion engine () is changed.

Handheld work apparatus having an air-cooled combustion engine

A method controls the rotational speed limiting of an engine in a handheld work apparatus. The crankshaft of the engine drives a worktool via a clutch which engages in dependence on the motor rotational speed. Above an engaging speed of the clutch, a drive connection with the crankshaft is made and below the engaging speed, the drive connection is interrupted. A speed control unit monitors the rotational speed of the engine and includes a rotational speed lock circuit which limits the speed to a limit below the engaging speed. During the start of the engine, the lock circuit is switched on; it is switched off after the engine has been taken into operation when a deactivation signal is present, wherein the deactivation signal is generated when an operation change signal of the work apparatus is detected.

Method for controlling the limiting of the rotational speed of a combustion engine

An internal combustion engine has a cylinder in which a combustion chamber, bounded on one side by a reciprocating piston, is formed. The piston drives a crankshaft rotatably mounted in a crank casing. The internal combustion engine has an inlet opening for combustion air into the crank casing, and an outlet opening out of the combustion chamber. The internal combustion engine has at least one overflow duct which connects the crank casing interior to the combustion chamber. The internal combustion engine has a crank casing pressure sensor for measuring the crank casing pressure, a device for determining the rotational position of the crankshaft, and an evaluation device which evaluates the measurements of the crank casing pressure sensor. A method for operating the internal combustion engine is provided where the ambient pressure is determined using the crank casing pressure measured by the crank casing pressure sensor.

A carburetor has a housing and an intake passage section disposed in the housing. A throttle element is arranged in the intake passage section and a choke element is arranged in the intake passage section upstream of the throttle element. At least one fuel opening opens downstream of the choke element into the intake passage section. A fuel valve controls a fuel quantity supplied to the at least one fuel opening. At least one auxiliary fuel port opens upstream of the choke element into the intake passage section.

In a method for priming a fuel metering device for an internal combustion engine with a piston arranged in a combustion chamber and driving a crankshaft that is rotatably supported in a crankcase, with a fuel pump that conveys fuel from a fuel tank to a metering valve that opens into a metering chamber at alternating operating pressure, and with a control unit that calculates and controls timing for the metering valve for metering a fuel quantity corresponding to a load situation of the internal combustion engine, the metering valve is kept open, independent of the calculated timing for the metering valve, for a priming duration in a starting phase of the internal combustion engine when the alternating operating pressure of the metering chamber at the mouth of the metering valve is negative and when a fuel system pressure in the fuel metering device is below a target pressure.

Method and device for priming a fuel metering device

A two-stroke engine has a fuel supply device, an intake passage formed partially in the fuel supply device, and an air filter with clean air chamber. The intake passage upstream of the fuel supply device is connected to the clean air chamber. A partition divides the intake passage downstream of the fuel supply device into a supply passage for fuel-free air and a mixture passage for fuel/air mixture. A throttle valve is supported in the intake passage and aligned in at least one operating state with the partition. A pressure differential between the mixture passage and the supply passage is determined, and in a method for operating such a two-stroke engine, fuel is supplied into the intake passage by a fuel supply valve in the operating state substantially only when the pressure in the mixture passage is not greater than the pressure in the supply passage.

A carburetor () has an intake channel () wherein a throttle element and a choke element are arranged with the choke element being upstream of the throttle element. The choke element is displaceable between an operating position () and at least one starting position (). A first fuel path is provided which supplies fuel to the intake channel section () in dependence upon the underpressure present therein. A first controllable valve () for controlling the supplied fuel quantity is mounted in the first fuel path. In order to achieve an adapted fuel supply in different operating states, a second fuel path is provided which defines a bypass line to the first valve (). A second valve () is mounted in the second fuel path. A method for operating the carburetor () provides that the second valve () is actuated in dependence upon at least one operating parameter of the carburetor ().
