A wireless communication is proposed that utilizes a large available bandwidth (e.g., 10-100,000 MHz) and employs a combination of frequency shifting (from an input RF signal to an IF signal) and frequency hopping from one IF frequency value to another within the available bandwidth. The combination of frequency shifting and frequency hopping adds a level of noise mitigation moving the transmission frequency as a function of time (and avoiding frequencies known to be subject to noise). By its nature, the addition of frequency hopping frustrates the ability of outsiders to access transmissions. A map of frequencies to be used may be delivered to both the transmitter and receiver via a separate command/control signal path. Alternatively, a transmitter may develop the map and forward it to the receiver. The frequency hopping sequence is preferably a randomly-generated sequence that uses the entire available bandwidth.

An application-specific wireless communication network for use in an industrial environment based on parameters defined by the IEEE 802.11 standard, modified by providing software-defined control of an assigned operating frequency band and software-defined control of the channel size, allowing the channel size to be relatively small as appropriate for the particular industrial application. The application-specific wireless communication network further controls other parameters defined by the standard to configure at least optimum transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, transmission latency, and ACK-retransmit to values appropriate for the specific industrial application.

Specialized wireless network arrangements for industrial applications

A radio module is configured to operate within a specialized frequency band, for example a band that has recently become available for use in the public domain. Superheterodyne techniques are used by a transmitter component of the radio module to frequency shift a conventional wireless data signal (e.g., used for WiFi, LTE telecommunications, etc.) into a designated band; a receiver component of the radio module is similarly configured to receive signals transmitted on the designated band and shift back into the conventional RF band (where standard components are able to further process the received signal).

Configurable smart radio module

An RF front-end system is formed to include tunable frequency converters within the transmit and receive sections of each channel, allowing for conventional, limited-bandwidth wireless devices to transmit and receive a broad range of frequencies. Both the transmit and receive sections use superheterodyne frequency conversion to provide the translation between the limited frequency band associated with conventional wireless devices and wide frequency band (e.g., between about 100 MHz and 7000 MHz) approved for wireless communication. By virtue of using a local oscillator that can be widely tuned over the complete available frequency spectrum, the up-converted signals used for transmission can be expanded over this wider frequency selection.

A transmitting and receiving unit includes a receiving branch and a transmitting branch that are in each case constructed for conducting complex signals, with a control device that drives a switch by which either a phase-locked loop is switched through to frequency converters provided at the transmitting and receiving end, for providing a common carrier frequency, or in each case an independently operating PLL is provided for the transmitting and receiving branch. Such a configuration enables the transmitter, for example, to operate with direct conversion whereas the receiver can operate, for example, on the low IF principle. The invention is suitable for OFDM multi-carrier systems.

Transmitting and receiving unit

A phase locked loop system for tuning the reception frequency of a receiver for digitally modulated received signals and analog-modulated received signals has at least one voltage controlled oscillator for producing an oscillator signal for a reception frequency tuning. A first frequency divider is provided for dividing the frequency of the oscillator signal to a nominal comparison frequency as a function of a receiving channel selection signal. A second frequency divider is provided for dividing a reference frequency as a function of a reception mode switching signal. A phase comparison circuit is provided for comparing the signals supplied by the frequency dividers in order to produce a tuning voltage for the voltage controlled oscillator wherein the gain of the phase comparison circuit is adjustable in order to optimize the phase noise.
