An improved paper-coating composition containing, per 100 parts by weight of finely divided pigment, from 5 to 25 parts by weight of one or more copolymers, having a glass transition temperature of from -40.degree. to 50.degree. C., in the form of an aqueous dispersion, and from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of one or more water-soluble or water-swellable co-binders selected from the group comprising polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose ethers, starch, casein, alginates and high molecular weight carboxyl-containing emulsion polymers. The co-binder is added to the paper-coating composition in the form of a water-in-oil emulsion. Paper-coating compositions having high water retention are obtained, and papers coated with such compositions have improved water resistance.

Terpolymers which have Fikentscher K-values of from 8 to 100 and comprise 50 mole percent of maleic anhydride units, from 35 to 45 mole percent of 2,4,4'-trimethylpent-1-ene units and from 5 to 15 mole percent of 2,4,4'-trimethylpent-2-ene units, and processes for their preparation by polymerizing 50 parts by weight of maleic anhydride, from 35 to 180 parts by weight of 2,4,4'-trimethylpent-1-ene and from 0.6 to 6 parts by weight of 2,4,4'-trimethylpent-2-ene per part by weight of 2,4,4'-trimethylpent-1-ene employed, in the presence of a free-radical initiator at from 60.degree. to 200.degree. C. and a pressure of from 1 to 20 bar, and separating the terpolymers from the unconverted monomers.

Polyethers are manufactured by polycondensing about equivalent amounts of a bisphenol and of a dihalogen compound in the presence of an anhydrous alkali metal carbonate, in the absence of a solvent or diluent. Thermoplastic nylons are stabilized with copper compounds and synergistic halides by incorporation of from 0.1 to 10% of a concentrate of nylon, copper bromide or iodide and calcium bromide, zinc bromide or magnesium bromide. The stabilized nylons may be thermoplastically processed to give semimanufactures or films.

A flameproofed nylon molding composition which can be processed by thermoplastic methods and which contains, as the flameproofing agent, from 5 to 30% by weight of brominated styrene oligomers and a synergistic metal oxide. The compositions may be used for the manufacture of injection moldings for the electrical industry.
