Process and device for assessing the quality of processed material

A device for unwinding a web of material which is wound in a roll on a winding core is utilized in a roll changer of a printing press. An inner shaft carries a clamping cone and an outer, coaxial shaft carries a torque transmitting element. These two shafts are slidable axially independently of each other and can operate in concert to rapidly stop a rotating wound roll of material having a large mass. Large torques can be transmitted to the wound roll without causing damage to the wound material.

A flexible plate is securable to a cylinder by insertion of fastening tabs, provided on beveled or angled ends of the plate, into cooperatively shaped end positioned pockets on the cylinder surface. The pockets may be formed by insert strips that utilize spaced tines to define the individual pockets.

An arrangement for preventing damage to print units, in which during a failure of the electrical supply of the web-fed rotary printing press, an energy reservoir yields its energy to control means which briefly charge adjusting means to bring at least one cylinder per print unit into a neutral pressure release position. In this way paper wrap-arounds during voltage failure no longer act in a manner damaging to the press.

A flexible plate is securable to a cylinder by insertion of fastening tabs, provided on beveled or angled ends of the plate, into cooperatively shaped and positioned pockets on the cylinder surface. The fastening tabs are spaced axially by interposed tongue and cut-outs. These spaced tabs and tongues form an axially discontinuous joint across the width of the cylinder on which the flexible plate or plates are positioned.

Individual printed image elements from an image to be inspected are allotted individual nominal ink density values, as by scanning an ideal printed sheet by a CCD matrix camera. The ideal values are stored in a main memory having segments for average, or grey, values for each image element. A multiplicity of proof images are scanned, and their density values measured and stored for each proof judged acceptable by an inspector. Thereafter, the variations in the acceptable proof density values are stored in the main memory as maximum and minimum acceptable deviations from the initial nominal values for each individual image element to provide a subjective tolerance value for the nominal density values in the main memory.

A multiplicity of proof images are scanned, and their density values measured and stored for each proof judged acceptable by an inspector. Method for judging printing sheets

An offset web-fed rotary printing machine having a plurality of in line printing couples generates torsionsal oscillations. These torsional oscillations are damped by applying a counteracting torsional moment to a free end of drive shaft assembly for the printing couples. The magnitude of the counteracting torsional moment is determined in response to the magnitude of the torsional oscillation moment which is measured by a torque measuring shaft. Damping of the torsional oscillation improves printing quality and press operational speed.

Offset web-fed rotary printing machine

A measuring head for detecting the location of an object such as a moving sheet of paper is disclosed. An elongated sensor having multiple light-sensitive elements is located perpendicular to the path of the object. A source of light is directed at the sensor, and those light-sensitive elements which are not in the shadow of the object produce a high output, while those in the shadow produce a low output. Circuit means are provided to provide a count of the elements and to store the count corresponding to the transition between the high and low values. This stored count, which represents the location of the object, is then displayed.

A control mechanism for disabling selected driven ink metering elements in rotary printing machines from a central remote control station is disclosed. The control includes plural command switches which are operated to provide control signal inputs to a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor is connected to the drive circuits for the individual ink metering elements to position them in response to the selected control signals to increase or decrease the amount of ink supplied by each element individually or jointly, and to disable selected ink metering elements by moving them to a zero position so as to select the width of the printing area.
