Embodiments include methods, electronic device, storage medium, and computer program to implement parallel Data-gram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) connections over a stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) association. In one embodiment, a method at a first network node for encoding user messages for secure transmission to a second network node comprises: initiating a Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) connection over a stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) association through a DTLS handshake using an existing Authenticated Chunks for SCTP (SCTP-AUTH) key from an existing DTLS connection over the SCTP association that transmits user messages: deriving a new SCTP-AUTH key from the initiated DTLS connection: transmitting further user messages through the initiated DTLS connection with the new SCTP-AUTH key: and closing the existing DTLS connection over the SCTP association upon confirmation that SCTP packets encrypted with the existing DTLS connection and SCTP packets authenticated by the existing SCTP-AUTH key have been delivered.

In an aspect, a method of controlling a timeout event for a data packet transmission in a wireless communications network is provided, wherein a data packet retransmission timer initially is set to a timeout value indicating the maximum allowed round-trip time (RTT) for the data packet transmission and a timeout event occurs upon the retransmission timer expiring. The method includes observing the RTT for the data packet transmission over a connection in the network, increasing, upon the retransmission timer expiring before a measured value is available for the observed RTT, the timeout value for the retransmission timer, and determining whether a currently set timeout value for the retransmission timer is to be decreased or not.

A method at a first node for encoding a message for secure transmission to a second node comprising. The method includes receiving the message for transmission to the second node and fragmenting the message into a plurality of fragments, wherein each fragment is of a selected size. The network node provides a control instance of a control procedure for handling administrative chunks of the SCTP packets and at least one data instance of a data procedure for handling association specific chunks of the SCTP packets. With the control instance, the network node discards association specific chunks of a received SCTP packet, and processes administrative chunks of the received SCTP packet. With each of the at least one data instance, the network node discards administrative chunks and a first set of association specific chunks of the received SCTP packet, and processes a second set of association specific chunks of the received SCTP packet, wherein the second set of association specific chunks relates the respective set of said at least one association.

A method and a first network node for managing a Stream Control Transmission Protocol, 'SCTP' is disclosed. The first network node handles a plurality of computational resources for executing procedures of SCTP at least partially simultaneously. The first network node provides a single instance procedure for managing the SCTP association and multi-instance procedures for managing the SCTP association. Furthermore, the first network node provides a control procedure, being the single instance procedure, for managing flow and acknowledgement of SCTP packets at the SCTP association. The first network node provides the following multi-instance procedures an outgoing transmission procedure for managing and transmitting the SCTP packets from the retransmission buffer, an incoming reception procedure for receiving and managing the SCTP packets, and an outgoing reception procedure for managing and transmitting Upper Layer Protocol frames to the upper layer.
