A system, a method and computer-readable media for managing content received over a network by a client device. A network transmission communicating an item of content is detected by a client device, and a determination is made whether the client device is in a mode of operation that allows the storing of uninvited media content. For example, the client device may be a mobile communication device monitoring the media being transmitted over a broadcast channel. When an item of content is observed traversing the broadcast channel, a set of user-defined preferences is accessed to determine whether to permit receiving the item. If permitted, the item of content is stored in a data store on the client device for subsequent presentation to the user.

Management of requested or pushed content in communications client devices

An embodiment of the invention is directed to retaining customers for a wireless-service provider ('carrier'). A ratio is calculated based on a number of incoming calls received by a mobile device and a number of outgoing calls originating from the mobile device. The ratio is also based on locations of callers that originated the incoming calls. The ratio is compared to an influencer threshold. When the ratio is greater than the influencer threshold, then a subscriber associated with the mobile device is indicated to be an influencer that potentially affects decisions of other subscribers regarding whether to cancel or maintain their subscriptions with the wireless service. An incentive is provided to the influencer to increase the likelihood that the influencer will retain a subscription with the wireless service, thereby increasing the likelihood that other subscribers who might be influenced by the influencer will retain their respective subscriptions.

Identifying influencers among a group of wireless-subscription subscribers

An access selection system comprises an interface system configured to receive a plurality of traffic and transfer a first traffic of the plurality of traffic over a first access link of a plurality of access links wherein the plurality of traffic is generated by a plurality of applications. The access system further comprises a processing system coupled to the interface system and configured to process the first traffic of the plurality of traffic to determine a first application of the plurality of applications that generated the first traffic and select the first access link from the plurality of access links based on the first application.

Application based access selection

A method and system of managing QoS for a plurality of video capture devices coupled to a common communication link. A CU coupled between the video capture devices and the communication link may provide each video capture device a respective level of QoS over the communication link. The CU may then receive a video stream from a given video capture device. Thereafter, the CU may detect a predefined minimum threshold rate of intraframes in the video stream and responsively adjust QoS over the communication link to increase a respective level of QoS provided to the given video capture device. In turn, the CU may send the video stream over the communication link with the increased respective level of QoS. Subsequently, the CU may adjust QoS over the communication link to decrease a respective level of QoS provided to the given video capture device.

Method and system for managing bandwidth based on intraframes

Systems, methods, and software are provided to manage a handover of a mobile station from a source base station to a target base station. In an embodiment, a method comprises monitoring a condition of a first backhaul link between the source base station and an access node, processing the condition of the first backhaul link to determine if the handover should be initiated, and in response to determining that the handover should be initiated, transmitting a handover request to initiate the handover.

Initiating a handover in a communication network

An embodiment of the current invention is directed to retaining customers for a wireless-service provider ('carrier'). A plurality of users who are influencers are identified from a group of wireless-service subscribers, wherein an influencer is a user who is likely to affect decisions of other users regarding whether to cancel or maintain their subscriptions with a particular carrier based on whether the influencer cancels or maintains his or her subscription. A list of influencers is thereby created. An incentive to provide the list of identified influencers is determined. The incentive increases the likelihood that the set of influencers will retain their respective subscriptions, thereby increasing the likelihood that other subscribers who might be influenced will also retain their respective subscriptions.

A communication system uses an Ethernet link to provide services to a user. The services have service priorities and bandwidth allocations on the Ethernet link. A pseudo-wire interface exchanges user communications for the services over the Ethernet link and transfers performance information indicating the performance of the Ethernet link. A management system processes the performance information and the service priorities to determine if a bandwidth adjustment should be made. The management system processes the performance information, the service priorities, and any bandwidth adjustment to determine if a status message should be transferred to the Ethernet service provider and to determine a message priority for the status message. The speed of response by the Ethernet service provider to the status message is indicated by the message priority.

Monitoring and control of an Ethernet link using pseudo-wire interfaces

A system, a method and computer-readable media for distributing content to client devices over a network. Various items of content are stored in the network or available through the network such that a client device may request to receive an item of content over the network. The method selects items of content by anticipating which of the items users will request. The selected items of content are transmitted over the network in a group delivery to multiple client devices.

Prediction-based adaptive content broadcasting over a network

A method of operating a communication system to communicate with a plurality of wireless devices comprises determining a first shape for a first wireless signal to reach the plurality of wireless devices, transmitting the first wireless signal encoded with a first communication to the plurality of wireless devices, receiving an acknowledgment from a first device of the plurality of wireless devices indicating that the first device received and decoded the first communication, determining a second shape for a second wireless signal to reach a second device of the plurality of wireless devices, and transmitting the second wireless signal encoded with error correction information for the first communication to the second device of the plurality of wireless devices.

Transmitting error correction information

Systems and methods for transmitting video are provided. The system determines the type of encoded video frames. Each of the video frames is then placed in a network transport packet. A priority level of the network transport packet is set based on the determined type of the video frame. The system can apply error correction coding to video frames of a lower priority level.

System and method for transmitting video information

A method for characterizing performance of an error correction scheme for digital data transport is provided. A digital data packet stream within an Internet Protocol packet stream is monitored for a first set of packet errors. Errors of the Internet Protocol packet stream are corrected according to the error correction scheme to produce a corrected Internet Protocol packet stream. The digital data packet stream within the corrected Internet Protocol packet stream is monitored for a second set of packet errors. The first and second sets of packet errors are compared to characterize the performance of the error correction scheme.

System and method for characterizing error correction performance for digital data transport over an IP network

A communication system receives packets transmitted by a user device. The packets implement a named service application to provide a communication service. The system transmits the packets to a packet network and identifies a communication problem. The system transmits information for delivery to the user device indicating that the named service application will be inhibited due to the communication problem and offering an alternative service application to provide the communication service. The system receives an acceptance transmitted by the user device, and in response, transmits the alternative service application for delivery to the user device. The system receives additional packets transmitted by the user device. The additional packets implement the alternative service application to provide the communication service. The system transmits the additional packets to the packet network.
