Optical cable, in particular for submarine connections. A water blocking resin filling composition of reduced hardness is disposed into interstices. Preferably, the resin composition is a polyurethane resin having less than about 35% by weight of a polyol/polyisocyanate mixture and about 60% to about 90% by weight of a mineral oil. The polyurethane resin preferably has less than about 12% by weight of a coupling agent. The cable has an optical core surrounded by a plurality of metallic wires and an outer polymeric sheath. The optical core is of the 'tight' type with a plurality of optical fibers embedded into a polymeric matrix disposed around a strength member.

An optical fiber cable having improved compatibility with a waterblocking filling composition is provided. In particular, the optical fiber cable has a cable component, wherein an optical fiber can be housed, such as a buffer tube or a slotted core, made of a polyolefinic material having high compatibility with a waterblocking filler disposed therein. The cable component is manufactured by employing a suitable polyolefinic material, polyethylene in particular, having a density in the finished component of at least 0.940 g/ml, preferably of about 0.942 g/ml or higher, up to about, e.g., 0.975. The material preferably has a melt flow index (MFI) at 190 &deg; C. and 2.16 kg lower than about 3 and a shear sensitivity of the same, a shear sensitivity higher than about 40.

The present invention relates to an optical fiber cable comprising a filling material and to the composition of said filling material. The oligomers of the invention comprise internal polyolefins obtained by polymerizing two or more hydrocarbon monomeric units having at least one unsaturation distributed randomly along the whole hydrocarbon chain wherein a mixture of these monomeric units comprises a maximum of 10% of monomeric units having the double bond in the &agr;-position.
