A low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp has a light-transmitting discharge vessel enclosing, in a gastight manner, a discharge space provided with a filling of mercury and a rare gas. The discharge vessel includes electrode(s) for maintaining a discharge in the discharge space. The discharge vessel further includes a dispenser for controllably dispensing hydrogen into the discharge space during lamp operation. The hydrogen gas pressure during lamp operation is in the range between 10Pa and 10 Pa.

Mercury dispensing compositions and device using the same

A high-pressure discharge lamp has an outer envelope () in which a discharge vessel () is arranged enclosing a discharge space () with an ionizable filling. The discharge vessel has two mutually opposed neck-shaped portions () through which current supply conductors () extend to a pair of electrodes () in the discharge space. A lamp base () of electrically insulating material supports the discharge vessel. The lamp base also supports the outer envelope. The outer envelope with a volume equal to or less than 2 cc encloses the current supply conductors and is connected to the lamp base in a gas-tight manner. A getter () is provided in the outer envelope for pumping out residual nitrogen from the outer envelope after sealing off the discharge lamp prior to operation of the discharge lamp, the getter () comprising at least 2.5 mbar.ml nitrogen. Preferably, the getter comprises an alloy of zirconium and aluminum or of zirconium and cobalt.

Compact high-pressure discharge lamp and method of manufacturing

A hollow cathode having at least a portion of the inner, outer or both surfaces coated with a layer of a getter material is described. Some methods for the production of the hollow cathode of the invention are also described, which include cathodic and electrophoretic deposition of the getter layer onto the hollow cathode.

A powder of a composite material comprising a non-evaporable getter material with a palladium coating continuously sorbs hydrogen. Embodiments in which the coverage of the palladium coating over the particles of the NEG material is complete can sorb hydrogen without the need for an activation treatment. Other embodiments in which the palladium coverage is less than total but greater than about 10% can also sorb gaseous species other than hydrogen. Loose powders, pressed powders, and sintered powders of the composite material are incorporated into getter devices and into the evacuated spaces of double-walled pipes, dewars, and thermal bottles. Methods for preparing powders of these composite materials utilize evaporative, sputter, and CVD deposition techniques. Another method prepares powders of the composite material by a liquid phase impregnation process.

Composite materials capable of hydrogen sorption comprising palladium and methods for the production thereof

A process is provided for production of a refrigerating circuit comprising non-evaporable getter material, wherein said getter material, previously introduced into the same circuit, is heated to a temperature of at least 200&deg; C. during or immediately after the circuit evacuating step, at a residual atmospheric gas pressure of not less than 10 mbar, before introduction of the mixture of cooling fluids and before the circuit sealing. Preferred is the use of zirconium-based getter alloys.

Process for the production of a refrigerating circuit comprising non-evaporable getter material

A getter comprising a calcium-aluminum compound including about 39% to about 43% calcium by weight produces a calcium vapor when sufficiently heated. The calcium vapor can condense to form a calcium film on an inside surface of a sealed evacuated enclosure such as a CRT to getter reactive species from the enclosed volume. The calcium-aluminum compound, preferably CaAl powder, can be mixed with either nickel powder, titanium powder, or both.

Getter device employing calcium evaporation

A process for the conversion of boric acid to dry boron oxide by thermal decomposition is described. Boron oxide may be produced as a powder or in the form of pellets, and in either form may additionally be enclosed in a gas permeable container to control particulate contamination. Applications are further disclosed for the use of boron oxide formed by this process to remove water from evacuated chambers and from gases. Specific applications include removing water from both inert gases and reactive gases, especially halogen and halogenated gases. Further applications directed to optical amplifiers and gas purifiers are also discussed.

Non-evaporable getter alloys

Compositions containing getter material and getter devices for which gettering activity can be activated at applied temperatures that are lower than those temperatures required for activating the getter material alone are disclosed. In one aspect, a getter composition that includes a getter component and an activator component is provided. The getter component is selected from the group consisting of evaporable and non-evaporable getter materials. The activator component is effective to heat said getter material to a temperature greater than about 500&deg; C. when said activator material is heated to a temperature of between about 280&deg; C. and about 500&deg; C. In some embodiments, the activator component is effective to bring the temperature of the getter material to greater than about 1,000&deg; C. These materials can be used in devices and locations for which low applied activation temperatures are required.

Getter materials capable of being activated at low applied temperatures

Compositions containing getter material and getter devices for which gettering activity can be activated to applied temperatures that are lower than those temperatures required for activating the getter material alone are disclosed. In one aspect, a getter composition that includes a getter component and an activator component is provided. The getter component is selected from the group consisting of evaporable and non-evaporable getter materials. The activator component is effective to heat said getter material to a temperature greater than about 500&deg; C. when said activator material is heated to a temperature of between about 280&deg; C. and about 500&deg; C. In some embodiments, the activator component is effective to bring the temperature of the getter material to greater than about 1,000&deg; C. These materials can be used in devices and locations for which low applied activation temperatures are required.

The present invention discloses metallic fiber boards having catalytic functionality and processes for producing the same. The boards are formed from a mesh of metallic fibers, each fiber having a first layer of an oxide and a second layer of a porous oxide. A catalyst, either disposed on the surface of the second layer, or dispersed within the second layer, provides catalytic functionality to the fiber board. The first layer is produced by thermal oxidation of the metallic fibers, while the second layer and catalyst are produced by thermal decomposition of precursor materials applied to the fiber board while in solution, typically as a spray of atomized droplets. The resulting boards are used to catalyze the combustion of hydrocarbons, especially methane, and particularly in household boilers.
