A gaming system includes a game controller configured to, for each game round of a game: select symbols from a first set that includes first special symbols for display in symbol positions associated with reels to form a game outcome; select a second special symbol from a second set and associate the selected second special symbol with an initial reel; associate each previously selected second special symbol with a subsequent reel or remove a previously selected second special symbol; evaluate the game outcome to determine any winning symbol combination occurring in the game outcome; for each reel, accumulate any first special symbol occurring in the game outcome and determine a prize value based on the accumulated first special symbols and any second special symbol associated with the reel when an accumulation threshold for the reel is met; and generate an award based on a total of prize values.

Systems and methods for providing a reel game having features associated with persistent elements

An electronic gaming device comprises a display and a game controller. The game controller sets a count limit for each reel bearing special symbols, the special symbols being borne by up to m−1 reels of a first set of reels. For each base game round, the game controller selects a plurality of symbols. For each occurrence of the special symbol within the displayed symbols, for the reel on which the special symbol appears, control the display to display an increment of a counter up to the count limit for the reel, wherein the count persists for the base game rounds. For a feature game round, the game controller further performs a wild reel substitution for each reel where the reel count satisfies an eligibility criterion to provide a second set of reels. A visual indicator of increased opportunities to win may be displayed for each established extended wild reel eligibility.

An electronic gaming machine includes a display device and a processor configured to execute instructions stored in a memory, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to at least initiate a base game that displays a plurality of symbols across a plurality of rows, and evaluate the plurality of symbols displayed in the plurality of rows to determine an outcome of the base game. The instructions also cause the processor to determine whether an accumulation condition is satisfied based on the plurality of symbols displayed during the base game, and in response to the accumulation condition being satisfied, increment at least one free game meter of a plurality of free game meters stored in the memory. Each free game meter of the plurality of free game meters is associated with one feature game of a plurality of feature games, and each free game meter stores a number of free games that will be awarded to a player of the electronic gaming machine when the feature game associated with the free game meter is triggered from the base game.
