The invention relates to neuroleptic/antidepressant 4-[4- or 6-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]-1-piperazinylalkyl substituted lactam derivatives having the general structure of formula I: ##STR1## wherein one of the groups R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is CF.sub.3, and the other is hydrogen or CF.sub.3 ;

Disclosed are compounds displaying improved preferential serotonin-1A binding activity. The claimed compounds have the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, and hydrogen;

Pharmaceutical composition which is useful as a medicinal product, in particular for the treatment of disorders of the central nervous system, characterized in that it contains customary pharmaceutical excipients, and at least one of the compounds of formula ##STR1## in which the trifluoromethyl substituent is at the 4-position, at the 5-position, or at 4- and 5-positions of the pyridinyl ring, and the substituent R denotes either hydrogen or a halogen, such as chlorine, at position(s) of the pyridinyl ring not occupied by CF.sub.3, and its pharmaceutically acceptable salts.
