A disposable bipolar electrosurgical probe which can be readily applied to the tissue to be treated, then discarded. The probe comprises an elongated substrate member having a peripheral surface of dielectric material and a longitudinal axis extending between a working end and an attachment end. At least a pair of electrically isolated electrodes extend continuously on the peripheral surface of the substrate member between an active region at the working end and an electrical terminal region at the attachment end for quick connection and/or disconnection, respectively, to opposite poles of an RF generator. A handle with a quick disconnect mechanism is provided to physically support the probe and enable it to be selectively energized. The probes can be of a fail safe construction so as to assure that only a proper probe can be used for a desired treatment.

Electrosurgical probe apparatus

An electrosurgical device for use in the treatment of tissue, particularly in the esophageal and anal regions of the body. The device comprises a multipolar probe body sized for passage into and within a body cavity whose tissue is to be treated without the aid of an endoscope. The probe body includes an active member for providing focused treatment of tissue, the active member being cylindrical and having a peripheral surface on which are mounted a plurality of electrodes, those of one polarity being interposed with those of the opposite polarity. The length of the electrodes can be chosen to obtain desired longitudinal focussing. Additionally, the electrodes can be positioned within a restricted arc to obtain desired peripheral focussing. The probe body also includes non active rounded cap members at its proximal and distal ends, and at its proximal end is mounted on a shaft which extends to the user. A filliform may be mounted on the distal end of the probe body to aid in its insertion into the esophagus. A handle can be attached to the shaft to enable the user to easily adjust the longitudinal positioning of the probe body as well as rotate the probe body about its longitudinal axis to precisely focus on the tissue to be treated without adversely affecting surrounding tissue.

Electrosurgical device with treatment arc of less than 360 degrees

Disclosed is a method for the fabrication of a flexible shaft comprising a spiral cut member having an essentially uniform inside diameter and a tapered linear profile coextensive with at least a portion of the spiral of sai d member. This flexible shaft is fabricated initially by progressively removing a portion of the exterior wall along a predetermined segment of a relatively rigid tube thereby forming a tapered profile along such segment. A series of cuts are thereafter made in the wall of the tapered segment of the tube resulting in a progressive and transition free increase in flexibility along itslongitudinal dimension; that portion of the tapered segment having the thinner wall being increasingly more flexible than that portion of the tapered segment having a comparatively thicker wall.

Method for fabrication of flexible shaft

A unique manipulative/grasping assembly adapted for use in conjunction with endoscopic instruments in disclosed herein. This assembly comprises an elongated tool having an elongated shaft with resilient, flexible fingers on the distal end thereof. These fingers can be biased in a spaced apart relationship. The tool of the shaft is housed within the channel of a first tubular sheath, and a second such tubular member concentrically surrounds the first tubular member, although somewhat shorter in length than the first tubular member. In the preferred embodiments of this invention, the proximal end of the tool and the second tubular member are cofixated to a stationary platform conveniently located along with the other controls of the endoscope. The proximal end of the inner tubular sheath is attached to a moveable, or sliding platform within this common control mechanism. In the operation of this assembly, the inner tubular sheath is extended or retracted along the shaft of the tool thereby enabling engagement of an object by the flexible fingers of the shaft without any axial motion of the tool or recession of the fingers of the tool from the object during the grasping procedure.

Multicomponent flexible grasping device

A surgical instrument is described for use with a flexible endoscope. The instrument includes a tubular member such as a catheter, in which a surgical tool is placed. The tool is formed of a working end and a control wire connected thereto and formed of a helically twisted flat ribbon sized to slidingly fit within the lumen of the tubular member. With a helically twisted control wire, the instrument may be bent and flexed in any plane without breakage, yet preserving accurate axial positional control substantially without longitudinal backlash. A distal end of the tubular member has a predetermined bend, with a channel cut therein in a manner selected to enable the working end of the tool, such as a knife, to be automatically moved into the channel and thus reliably extended from a side of the distal end of the catheter. A manipulator is used at the proximal end of the endoscope to precisely control the position of the working end of the surgical tool.
