A method is performed at a computing device having a display, processors, and memory. A user inputs a natural language expression, directed to a selected data source, in a first region of a graphical user interface. The device parses the natural language expression and determines that the natural language expression specifies a data table from the data source either (i) directly by identifying the data table specified in the natural language expression or (ii) indirectly by identifying a data value specified in the natural language expression. The data value is a data value of a data field within the data table. In response, the device generates and displays, in the graphical user interface, a count of data rows of the data table, and a rendering of data rows and data columns of the data table.

Using a natural language interface to explore entity relationships for selected data sources

A method executes at a computing device that includes a display. The device displays a user interface that includes a data flow pane and a calculation pane, the data flow pane including a node/link diagram for a data prep flow. A user selects a node in the diagram, and the device populates affordances in the calculation pane according to data fields of a data set associated with the selected node. A first user input specifies grouping on a first data field, and a second user input specifies an aggregation function on a second data field. In response to the user inputs, for each distinct value of the first data field, the device aggregates corresponding values of the second data field according to the aggregation function. Calculated data values are displayed in the calculation pane. The device saves rows of data displayed in the calculation pane as a new data source.

Visually defining multi-row table calculations in a data preparation application

A method generates a data visualization dashboard using a natural language interface. The method is performed at a computing device having a display, one or more processors, and memory. A user specifies a natural language input directed to a data source, using a first region of a graphical user interface. In response, the computing device parses the natural language input to identify one or more database entities from the data source. For each of the database entities, the computing device determines one or more respective analytical operations for the respective database entity. The device then generates a dashboard, which includes a plurality of data visualizations corresponding to distinct combinations of the analytical operations. The first dashboard is displayed in a second region of the graphical user interface, distinct from the first region.

Using a natural language interface to generate dashboards corresponding to selected data sources

A method executes at a computing device that includes a display, one or more processors, and memory. The device displays a user interface that includes a data pane and a calculation pane. The data pane comprises data rows and data columns. Each of the data columns corresponds to a data field from a data source. The device receives a first user input to specify a grouping on a first data field. The device receives a second user input to specify an aggregation function on a second data field. In response to the first and second user inputs, for each distinct value of the first data field, the device aggregates corresponding values of the second data field according to the aggregation function. A plurality of first data rows are displayed in the calculation pane. The device saves the rows of data displayed in the calculation pane as a new data source.

A method generates a graphical representation of a data source using a graphical user interface. The user interface includes a schema information region and a data visualization region. The schema information region includes field names associated with data fields. The data visualization region includes shelf regions that determine characteristics of a visual graphic. Each shelf region is configured to receive user placement of field names. The user selects field names and places each field name in a respective shelf region. The user edits a first shelf region, creating a first calculated element in the first shelf region. The first calculated element does not match any of the field names in the schema information region. The method generates a visual graphic based on the content of the shelf regions, including the user-selected field names and the first calculated element, and displays the visual graphic in the data visualization region.
