The present invention is concerned with a composite material matrix of a synthetic or natural resin with a reinforcement of a multiplicity of lightweight, resilient shaped reforming elongatable, non-linear, non-flammable carbonaceous fibers. The fibers preferably have a sinusoidal or coil-like shape, a reversible deflection ratio of greater than 1.2:1 and an aspect ratio (1/d) greater than 10:1. The fiber-reinforced composite material of the present invention possess excellent impact resistance properties.

Carbonaceous fiber reinforced composites

The invention described herein is an apparatus and method for forming a wear-resistant metal composition. As a specific example, aluminum oxide powder is added to a magnesium alloy to provide a wear-resistant magnesium composition. The magnesium alloy, as the base metal, is placed in a crucible and melted with a burner positioned external to the crucible. A pump having a suction side and a discharge side is mounted on the crucible, with the pump head being suspended below the surface of the molten magnesium. The pump includes a feed tube connected to the suction side, and this tube has a suction opening therein which lies partly above and partly below the surface of the molten metal. The aluminum oxide is fed into the feed tube, and the suction action of the pump causes a vortex at the molten metal surface. The vortex pulls the molten magnesium through the suction opening where it mixes with the aluminum oxide powder. The resulting blend of magnesium and aluminum oxide gives a good, wear-resistant magnesium product.

Apparatus and method for forming a wear-resistant metal composition

Aziridinyl-terminated polymers containing the recurring unit ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl and R.sub.2 is hydrogen or a side chain of like structure, are prepared by warming N-(2-hydroxyethyl)- or N-(2-hydroxypropyl)ethylenimine or -propyleneimine. Generally, the reaction is conducted in the presence of an alkali metal and at least trace amounts of water. The polymers are useful as curing agents for epoxy resins.

Polymers from N-(2-hydroxyethyl)aziridines

Novel copolymers are prepared in the novel process comprising copolymerizing an N-substituted aziridine with a vicinal epoxide or episulfide. Compounds having at least one active hydrogen, such as water or an alcohol, may be advantageously included as coreactants in the process. The structure of the copolymers, exclusive of any chain-extending or terminal groups, is defined by alternating ring-opened units of the N-substituted aziridine monomer and the epoxide or episulfide monomer. The copolymers are useful as stabilizers for chlorinated solvents, rubber cure accelerators, antioxidants, surfactants, lubricants, acid scavengers, dye-retention aids, retention aids for starch, and as flocculants.
