Fuel used as a coolant in an aircraft can be thermally conditioned for active thermal management of the airframe and engine. The fuel can be thermally conditioned using the residual cooling capacity of a power and thermal module (PTM), providing flexibility of thermal system design, or via a compact engine-mounted turbo cooler, to maximize system efficiency. The fuel can be stored in a thermal reserve tank to provide a missionized heat sink capable serviceable for periodic high heat flux equipment. The cooling and provision of cooled fuel to aircraft components can be intelligently controlled to provide efficient cooling and effectively unlimited ground hold times.

Active fuel thermal conditioning for aircraft

An aircraft cooling machine is provided that includes a closed loop air cycle system and a vapor cycle system that both provide cooling aircraft loads. The closed loop air cycle system includes a compressor and a turbine and the vapor cycle system includes a compressor, condenser and an evaporator. A coupler is provided that pneumatically couples the turbine in the closed loop air cycle system to the compressor in the vapor cycle system via existing pneumatic power in the closed loop air cycle system.

Integrated aircraft cooling machine

A power and cooling management system configured to flexibly couple various adaptive modules to an integrated power and cooling unit to suit any aircraft platform is provided. The integrated power and cooling unit has a compressor(s), power turbine(s), cooling turbine(s) and integral starter generator(s) mounted to the shaft of the power and cooling turbine. The integrated power and cooling unit may be pneumatically and/or pneumatically coupled to an adaptive module that comprises an additional compressor and an additional turbine or electrically coupled to a fuel cell which provides the main power after entering the full operation mode. When the engine includes an integral starter generator mounted thereto, the integral starter generator of the integrated power and cooling unit is operative to receive electric power from the engine mounted generator. Alternatively, a motor/generator may be mounted to the shaft of the additional turbine of the adaptive module.

Flexible power and thermal architectures using a common machine

An integrated power and pressurization management system supplies electrical power and cabin pressurization and cooling air during both airborne and ground operations. The system includes an integral auxiliary power unit (APU) that has a compressor, a motor-generator, and a power turbine all mounted on one shaft. The integral APU can supply compressed air for cabin pressurization and environmental cooling functions, and can generate electrical power for various electrical loads. The system further includes one or more electrically driven compressors.

Integrated power and pressurization system

An integrated power and cooling machine having an indirect regenerative air cooling feature may be useful for providing power and environmental control to both ground vehicles, such as tanks, and aircraft, such as helicopters and airplanes. The integrated power and cooling machine may prevent contamination of the conditioned supply air by isolating the conditioned supply air from the machine lubricating and heat transport fluid (e.g., operating fluid) that may leak into the conditioned supply air. Furthermore, the integrated power and cooling machine may utilize a lower energy source from the engine, thereby reducing energy consumption and improving system efficiency. In addition, a flow mixing device may enhance airflow to improve cooling performance.

Indirect regenerative air cycle for integrated power and cooling machines

An integrated environmental control system for providing conditioned air supply in an aircraft is provided. The system includes an integrated bootstrap air cycle subsystem and a regenerative air cycle subsystem, which are in heat exchange relationship. The bootstrap and the regenerative air cycle systems are also in heat exchange relationship with a liquid cooling cycle subsystem. In the bootstrap cycle, bleed air is compressed and expanded. After absorbing heat from the liquid cycle, the expanded air from the bootstrap cycle is received and expanded by a first turbine of the regenerative air cycle. Before it is received by a compressor of the regenerative cycle, the air flow, which is expanded and cooled by the first turbine, absorbs heat from the liquid cycle, supplies air to the cabin and absorbs heat from the bootstrap cycle. After the compression, the air flow is received by a second turbine of the regenerative cycle and expanded. The expanded air flow merges into the air flow from the first turbine of the regenerative cycle.

Recirculating regenerative air cycle

An integrated bleed air and engine starting system for an engine utilizes an innovative flow multiplier air turbine starter to provide bleed air supply to an ECS as well as starting an engine. The technique reduces bleed air consumption by mixing fan stage air and high stage air for ECS fresh air usage. It also can eliminate or reduce the size of the precooler heat exchanger. The system includes an air turbine starter subsystem and an air flow subsystem. The air turbine starter subsystem includes a compressor, a turbine, and a common shaft fixed between the compressor and turbine. Also provided is a gear coupled to a gearbox which links the engine with a shaft, as well as a variable nozzle valve intermediate the turbine and engine. The air flow subsystem comprises a diverter valve downstream of the turbine, an isolation valve intermediate the turbine and an auxiliary power unit, and a check valve downstream of the compressor and turbine. A fan is in air flow communication with the compressor and engine.

Integrated bleed air and engine starting system

A liquid-to-air cycle system for conditioning water vapor bearing air and cooling a liquid load comprises an air cycle subsystem and a liquid cycle subsystem. The air cycle subsystem includes a first air-to-air heat exchanger, a reheater downstream of the first air-to-air heat exchanger, a first turbine downstream of the reheater, a first water extractor downstream of the first turbine, a first liquid-to-air heat exchanger downstream of the water extractor, and a second turbine downstream of the first liquid-to-air heat exchanger. Thereby, the second turbine can recover rejected heat from the first liquid-to-air heat exchanger. The liquid cycle subsystem is in heat exchange relationship the air cycle subsystem at the first liquid-to-air heat exchanger such that the first liquid-to-air heat exchanger absorbs the rejected heat from the liquid cycle subsystem.

Dual expansion energy recovery (DEER) air cycle system with mid pressure water separation

An environmental control system includes an air cycle subsystem and a liquid cycle subsystem. The air cycle subsystem includes a liquid-to-air condenser, a liquid-to-air reheater downstream of the condenser, and a turbine downstream of the reheater. The liquid cycle subsystem is in heat exchange relationship with the air cycle subsystem, with the liquid cycle subsystem comprising the condenser, the reheater, a first liquid-to-air heat exchanger, and a second liquid-to-air heat exchanger. The heat exchange relationship occurs at the condenser and the reheater.
