A sensor assembly with a sensing element sends a sensor signal from the sensing element to attached process transmitter over sensor connection wires. The sensor assembly has memory circuitry for storing information related to the sensor assembly and interface circuitry that provides for digital communication of the stored information with the attached process transmitter. This digital communication is sent over the sensor connection wires.

Sensor/transmitter plug-and-play for process instrumentation

A process transmitter includes a transmitter housing and a liquid detector coupled to the transmitter housing. The liquid detector includes a temperature sensor configured to generate signals indicative of a presence of liquid within the transmitter housing. The process transmitter also includes a controller coupled to the liquid detector configured to receive the generated signals, determine the presence of liquid within the transmitter housing based on the received signals, and generate an output indicative of the determined presence of liquid within the transmitter housing.

A thermocouple temperature sensor has a thermocouple with first and second conductors connected at a junction and a resistance temperature device with first and second conductors. The first conductor of the resistance temperature device is connected to the first conductor of the thermocouple. A first external conductor is connected to the second conductor of the thermocouple, wherein the first external conductor is configured as a voltage sense conductor for the resistance temperature device and a voltage sense conductor for the thermocouple. A second external conductor is connected to the first conductors of the thermocouple and the resistance temperature device, wherein the second external conductor is configured as a current conductor for the resistance temperature device and a voltage sense conductor for the thermocouple. A third external conductor is connected to the second conductor of the resistance temperature device and is configured as a current conductor for the resistance temperature device.

A process transmitter includes device circuitry that generates values that are to be conveyed on a current loop. A series control transistor is in series between the current loop and the device circuitry and a saturation prevention circuit prevents the series control transistor from entering saturation.

A field device for use in an industrial process includes a housing having a cavity formed therein. A humidity-sealed electronics module has a first compartment formed therein and is positioned in the cavity. The humidity-sealed electronics module includes a seal board. The seal board separates the first compartment of the humidity sealed electronics module from a second compartment in the housing. A first electrical component in the first compartment is mounted to the seal board and a second electrical component in the second compartment is electrically connected to the first electrical component.

A plug-and-play sensor peripheral component includes an electrically conductive physical connector; an electrical connector; a transformer; and an RF communication and data storage circuit. The electrical connector is electrically connected to the physical connector by a first conductive path. The transformer is electrically connected to the RF communication and data storage circuit. The transformer and the RF communication and data storage circuit are electrically isolated from the physical connector and the electrical connector. Electrically connecting the physical connector to the electrical connector by other than the first conductive path inductively couples the RF communication and data storage circuit to the first conductive path.

A process variable transmitter for measuring a temperature of an industrial process, includes a first electrical connector configured to couple to a first wire of a thermocouple, the first electrical connector includes a first electrode and a second electrode. The first and second electrodes are configured to electrically couple to the first wire of the thermocouple. A second electrical connector is configured to couple to a second wire of the thermocouple, the second electrical connector includes a third electrode and a fourth electrode. The third and fourth electrodes are configured to electrically couple to the second wire of the thermocouple. The second wire is of a different material than the first wire. Measurement circuitry is coupled to the first and second electrical connectors configured to provide an output related to a temperature of the thermocouple. The measurement circuitry is further configured to identify polarity of thermocouple based upon at least one measurement taken between at least two of the first, second, third and fourth electrodes.

Process variable transmitter with thermocouple polarity detection

An industrial process control transmitter includes a first input configured to couple to a first sensor, and a second input configured to couple to a second sensor. Measurement circuitry is configured to couple to the first and second sensors and provide an output related to a sensed process variable. A multiplexer is configured to selectively couple the first and second sensors to the measurement circuitry. An equalizer circuit is coupled to the first and second sensors and configured to equalize a voltage potential between the first sensor and the measurement circuitry.

Industrial process control transmitter with multiple sensors

A system couples fieldbus data from a fieldbus line to a network line. The system includes a data format converter that converts the data to USB data. A coupler that includes a first insulating barrier is coupled in cascade with the converter. A host receives the USB data. The host has a data server interface and a network connection. The data server interface presents the data to the network line. A regulator couples power between the host and the fieldbus line with the regulator including a second insulating barrier. Data and power are isolatingly coupled between the fieldbus line and the network line.
