The wear and friction characteristics of the wear elements may be further modified for particular applications by coating with phenolic resins, optionally including wear particles.

A wearing dry friction material element is mounted on a support member by a cured rubber adhesive in a spaced pattern. The cured adhesive has a tensile strength adequate to retain the frictional element to the substrate, and also serves to cushion the shock at engagement between the frictional element and a contacting surface. An asbestos-free friction material characterized by good friction and wear properties. It comprises the combination of a binder resin, copper oxide, antimony sulfide and an aromatic polyamide resin. Barytes is also a valuable additive in the combination.

Nucleate boiling or ebullition in pool boiling applications is improved by the use of a heat transfer surface having dendrites or nodules electroplated onto the substrate. The nodules are formed by plating at high current densities, and may be further electroplated at lower current densities to strengthen and enlarge them. Also described are deforming techniques, such as cold-rolling, to flatten the ends of the nodules and strengthen them by work hardening.
