A cardiopulmonary resuscitator massager pad is provided comprising a compressible, fluid filled nonisoelastic enclosure adapted for mounting on the reciprocal piston of a cardiopulmonary resuscitator. The massager pad includes means for restricting lateral expansion of the enclosure and a face, including means for evenly distributing the pressure of the fluid in the enclosure on the patient's chest.

A pneumatic lung analog for simulating spontaneous breathing and for testing of ventilatory devices used with spontaneously breathing patients and a kit for modifying training test lungs for this purpose is provided. The lung analog comprises a frame, a test ventilator, or lung simulator, expansible chamber; and a spontaneous breath expansible chamber disposed on the frame for receiving the output of a ventilatory device and a spontaneous breath generator, respectively. A movable end plate is disposed on the lung simulator and spontaneous breath expansible chambers for concurrent movement therewith when the spontaneous breath expansible chamber is inflated. Transducers are provided for measuring the airway pressure and the volume of air supplied to the lung simulator chamber by the ventilator being tested for determining the performance characteristics of the ventilator, such as the added work of breathing attributable to the ventilator.

An improved cardiopulmonary resuscitator and method of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is disclosed which involves cyclically compressing a patient's chest and simultaneously ventilating the patient's lungs to a safe limiting pressure over a period of time encompassing at least one complete compression cycle. Retrograde and exhale flow from the patient's lungs is prevented during the systolic portion of the compression cycle providing for a pressure increase in the patient's thorax due to compression of the patient's chest. Simultaneous application of ventilation pressure to the patient's lungs and compression of the patient's chest creates a pressure increase in the patient's thorax during systole which enhances perfusion. Continuous application of ventilation pressure during the diastolic portion of the compression cycle insures good tidal volume and enhanced blood gas exchange. Since the high intrapulmonary pressures created by the technique are substantially equaled by intrathoracic pressures and there is no substantial difference of pressure across the alveoli, trauma that would normally occur due to generation of differential pressures of the magnitude created by this technique in the lungs is avoided. After the patient's lungs are ventilated to the predetermined limiting pressure over a period of time encompassing a predetermined number of compression cycles, the patient's lungs are vented to the atmosphere.

CPR Protocol and cardiopulmonary resuscitator for effecting the same

A reciprocal cardiac compressor is provided for cyclically compressing a patient's chest. Preferably a resuscitator is also provided for ventilating the patient's lungs. The compressor includes a reciprocal compressor pad positioned anterior to the patient's heart and a stationary base positioned posterior to the patient's heart. An anterior electrode is disposed on the face of the compressor pad for compression between the compressor pad and the patient's sternum and a posterior electrode is disposed on the base of the compressor for compression between the base and the patient's back. A cardiac defibrillator is connected between anterior and posterior electrodes for establishing a defibrillating electric current therebetween. A monitor is connected to the anterior and posterior electrodes for monitoring the electrical activity of the patient's heart. Means for snychronizing the defibrillator and the compressor is provided comprising a pressure sensitive switch for synchronizing the defibrillator and compressor such that defibrillating current is applied to the patient's heart only during a systolic portion of the compression cycle of the compressor.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitator, defibrillator and monitor

A reciprocal cardiac compressor is provided for cyclically compressing a patient's chest. The cardiac compressor includes a resuscitator for ventilating the patient's lungs. A first internal electrode is positioned in the esophagus of the patient with an esophageal-pharyngeal airway. The resuscitator ventilates the patient's lungs through the esophageal-pharyngeal airway. The cardiac compressor includes a compressor pad positioned anterior to the patient's heart for compressing the patient's sternum and heart. An external electrode is disposed on the face of the compressor pad for compression between the compressor pad and the patient's sternum. A cardiac defibrillator is connected between external and internal electrodes for establishing a defibrillating electric current therebetween. A monitor is connected to the external and internal electrodes for monitoring the electrical activity of the patient's heart. Means for synchronizing the defibrillator and the compressor is provided comprising a pressure sensitive switch for synchronizing the defibrillator and compressor such that defibrillating current is applied to the patient's heart only during a systolic portion of the compression cycle of the compressor.

A locking member is positionable within an opening in the arm and is likewise engageable with a post and slidable jointly with the arm along the axis of the post to initiate a clamping force. A shaft having a handle assembly on one end is threadable in the locking member and hand rotatable to move the locking member laterally relative the post to secure the arm and post together at selected positions relative each other. A spring means in the handle assembly provides increased turning torque as the lock is tightened and at a preselected designing load, a brake member overrides the washer to prevent further hand tightening.

Sliding arm lock assembly

The support and retention includes an upper back supporting portion spaced in part at least from the base providing a clearance opening for insertion of a mechanical compressor platform without requiring movement of the patient. Preferably, the clearance opens to both sides to permit insertion of the platform from either side and the upper portion is also preferably saddle-shaped and inclined upwardly to permit downward sloping of the head to provide patency of the breathing canal.
