Disclosed herein is an optical aberration compensation lens using glass-ceramics and a method of making the same. The method of manufacturing the optical aberration compensation lens includes applying at least one heat treatment to a base glass material of a base composition to form a glass-ceramic material with a volume filling fraction of one or more species of nanocrystals. This process is glass composition agnostic and can be applied to generate any glass-ceramic composition formed through controlled nucleation and growth. In certain embodiments, the species and/or volume filling fraction of nanocrystals determines the resulting index of refraction and dispersion characteristic. Accordingly, application of different heat treatments (e.g., nucleation temperature, growth temperature, and/or treatment times) to the same base glass material produces different glass-ceramic materials with different optical properties (e.g., index of refraction and/or dispersion characteristic).

Optical aberration compensation lens using glass-ceramics and method of making

The embodiments relate to systems and methods for wavefront error (WFE) correction of a conformal optical component using a planar lens. The embodiments include a conformal optical component transmissive to electromagnetic radiation (EMR), which is propagated through the conformal optical component along a path axis. The conformal optical component is rotationally asymmetric about the path axis. A planar corrector lens is configured to correct a WFE of the conformal optical component. The planar corrector lens defines a lens axis. Accordingly, use of a single planar corrector lens for WFE correction of a conformal optical component reduces bulk and manufacturing complexity.

Disclosed are optical systems that vary the refractive index of at least one relatively angled transmissive surface to reduce reflections. Embodiments include at least one optical component with relatively angled surface portions that are transmissive to electromagnetic radiation (EMR). In certain embodiments, an electrically conductive layer reflective to EMR and an anti-reflective coating are proximate the optical component. The anti-reflective coating includes a gradient-index (GRIN) layer with an index of refraction that varies across a length to increase propagation of EMR at a predetermined angle of incidence to prevent reflection of the EMR between the angled transmissive surfaces.

Gradient refractive index (GRIN) materials can include multi-phase composites having substances with differing refractive indices disposed non-uniformly within one another. Particular glass composites having a gradient index of refraction can include: an amorphous phase, and a phase-separated region disposed non-uniformly within the amorphous phase. The glass composites include a mixture containing: GeZand AZin a combined molar ratio of about 60% to about 95%, and CsX and PbZ in a combined molar ratio of about 5% to about 40%, where A is As, Sb or Ga, X is Cl, Br or I, and Z is S or Se. When A is As, the glass composites include PbZ in a molar ratio of about 15% or less. The amorphous phase and the phase-separated region have refractive indices that differ from one another. More particularly, A is Ga or As, X is Cl, and Z is Se.

Methods and mechanisms for correcting a wavefront error in an optical element are disclosed. A wavefront error that is downstream of an optical element in an optical path is determined. A refractive index prescription that reduces the wavefront error is determined. A beam of energy is directed at a surface of the optical element in accordance with the refractive index prescription to alter the surface to change an index of refraction at multiple locations on the surface.

Mechanisms for customizing a refractive index of an optical component are disclosed. In one example, sub-wavelength openings are formed in a top layer of anti-reflective (AR) material of an optical component to tailor transmission characteristics of the AR material over a range of angles of incidence and a range of wavelengths. In another example, sub-wavelength openings are formed at different filling fractions in the surface of the optical component.

Devices and methods for identifying and destroying cancer cells are disclosed. Devices and methods may relate to techniques of imaging and/or irradiating cells bearing a plurality of surface-modified superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) therein. Imaging can be realized with a magnetic imaging device that generates an imaging magnetic field. A magnetic field associated with the SPION-bearing cancer cells and resulting from imaging, can be detected with a detection device. Irradiation can be realized with a magnetic field emission device that generates an irradiation magnetic field such that the SPIONs in the SPION-bearing cells are heated as a result of said magnetic field, thereby killing the SPION-bearing cells. The magnetic imaging device may be used as the magnetic field emission device. The magnetic fields produced for imaging and/or irradiating, as well as the associated magnetic field, can be focused using one or more magnetic metalens devices.

An optical element is disclosed. The optical element includes a plurality of layers. The plurality of layers includes a notch filter array that has a plurality of notch filter elements. Each notch filter element is configured to filter out energy within at least one wavelength band of interest. The plurality of layers further includes a polarization-responsive grid array having a plurality of polarization elements and includes a microlens array having a plurality of microlens elements. Each microlens element is configured to image a portion of a scene onto an image plane.

Multi-layered optical element

A mask array apparatus includes a monolithic structure that includes a substrate layer transmissive for at least a portion of an infrared wavelength band and an array of individually addressed pixel structures. Each pixel structure is in stacked relation above or below the substrate layer, and includes at least one micro-plate heating element layer, circuitry, and at least one phase change material (PCM) element. The heating element layer is transmissive for the wavelength band, and has switchable on and off states configured to produce temperature changes. The circuitry is configured to individually address the heating element layer, separately from heating element layers in other pixel structures, to switch the heating element layer between the on and off states. The PCM is in stacked relation above or below the heating element layer and configured to change transmissive states in the wavelength band in response to the temperature changes.

A refractive index device and method of making it include obtaining a glass structure comprising a plurality of nucleation sites. The glass structure is formed from a glass composition that comprises a first chemical component and a second chemical component. A crystal of the second chemical component has a different second refractive index from a first refractive index of the first chemical component. Each nucleation site defines where a crystal of the second chemical component can be grown. The method includes causing crystals of the second chemical component to grow in situ at a set of the plurality of nucleation sites in order to produce a spatial gradient of a refractive index in the glass structure.

Ternary chalcogenide glass materials containing germanium can display enhanced properties compared to corresponding binary chalcogenide glass materials lacking germanium. For instance, ternary chalcogenide glass materials containing germanium, arsenic and selenium can exhibit improved Vickers micro-hardness values and other enhanced mechanical properties while still maintaining small changes in refractive index as function of temperature. Such ternary glass materials can have a formula of (AsSe)Ge, in which x ranges between about 1 and 5, y ranges between about 30 and 40, z ranges between about 60 and 70, and y+z=100. Methods for producing the ternary glass materials can include blending arsenic, selenium, and germanium as a melt, and cooling the melt to form the ternary glass material.
