A reconfigurable base station suitable for supporting multiple wireless communication system standards includes a set of channel unit boards, each providing processing operations for user signals assigned to multiple carriers of the system, a set of a radio boards, each generating a radio frequency (RF) output signal for each of at least a subset of the multiple carriers, and a reconfigurable bus interconnecting the channel unit boards and radio boards. The base stations configured to support a particular wireless system standard, such as IS-95 CDMA, by assigning particular user signals to designated signal lines of the reconfigurable bus. The base station may then be reconfigured to support other CDMA standards, such as, e.g., IS-95C with or without Orthogonal to Transmit Diversity (QTD), Multi-Carrier (MC) cdma2009, or Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, (UMTS) by assigning. other user signals to the signal lines of the reconfigurable bus. The assignment of signal lines may be implemented dynamically under the control of software running on a base station control computer, or by establishing fixed connections between the bus signal lines and appropriate ports of the channel unit and radio boards.

Reconfigurable wireless system base station

A modular apparatus is described which houses electronic equipment. The apparatus includes a plurality of electronic modules surrounded by an air vent system. In one embodiment, the air vent system cools the electronic components indirectly, through a connection module. In another embodiment the electronic components are cooled directly. One of the main advantages of the present invention is its modular configuration which allows additional components to be added with relative ease as the requirements of the system are expanded over time.

Modular design of electronic equipment systems

A microwave cavity closure structure encloses an upper splitter cavity bounded at its top and bottom by, respectively, a rigid metal plate and a flexible sheet metal dish and (b) a lower combiner cavity bounded at its top and bottom by another such dish and another lower such plate. Each such cavity has a central region occupied by a raised circular boss, and the lower plate bounding the bottom cavity mounts, outward of the central boss, two concentric annular sheet metal rings each having a flat top and peripheral flanges extending from the margins of that top down into annular grooves in the lower plate. One or more rings of dielectric posts are disposed in each cavity radially between the central boss therein and the cavity periphery to vertically space at the ring's location the plate and dish of the cavity by a distance determined by the posts, while concurrently permitting the dish to be flexed in the cavity's central region for cavity tuning purposes. Each interior of each annular ring in the combiner cavity is filled with V-shaped segments of metal coil stock ribbon which space apart the top portion of the ring and the underlying portion of the lower plate by a distance determined by those segments.
