A plurality of sensors, such as a door handle lift switch, a headlight switch, and an ignition switch, are normally provided in an automotive electrical system. A master microcontroller normally is coupled to each of these sensors for receiving a signal therefrom and responsive thereto generating a corresponding controller signal. Power drivers, each operatively coupled to the master controller, normally are provided for energizing and powering loads coupled thereto, with each load being either an indicator or actuator that is operated responsive to its corresponding sensor. The self-diagnostic method includes the steps of mechanically actuating a selected one of the sensors, and then electrically actuating a first confirming indicator, such as an audible chime, indicative of the master controller receiving and successfully processing the corresponding sensing signal. A second confirming indicator, such as an illuminated lamp, is energized responsive to sensing that the master controller has energized the corresponding power driver responsive to receiving the sensing signal.

Stall current levels are determined according to measured peak currents occurring immediately after the energization of a motor. By utilizing a fractional value of the determined peak current value, the stall current is determined each time the motor is energized to compensate for variations in current flowing in a motor at different ambient temperatures.

A rectifier circuit and control regulator are assembled onto a single plate for integral installation within the housing of an alternator. The method includes fabricating the plate with insulating, masking and conducting layers so as to provide mounting areas for commonly oriented rectifier diodes and efficient cooling for the entire unit.

A conventional voltage regulator is modified to reduce the power output from an associated alternator type generator by lowering the field current duty cycle when the ambient temperature at the voltage regulator exceeds a predetermined critical value, to thereby prevent damage to the alternator and regulator components until the ambient temperature is reduced. A temperature responsive means is connected across the field winding of the alternator and provides an override control function to the regulating section of the regulator, whenever the ambient temperature is too high. The override control causes the closed field current switch to be opened and to be held opened for a period of time that is directly related to the value of the sensed ambient temperature above the critical value.
