The invention relates to the sizing of paper and board using alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA). The invention provides a sizing composition which comprises an aqueous emulsion of an ASA wherein the ASA incorporates a maximum of 1% by weight (preferably a maximum of 0.5% by weight) of polymeric residues. The composition may incorporate less than 0.5% by weight of olefins. Paper sizing compositions in accordance with the invention provide enhanced resistance to penetration of the edges of paper and board by agents such as hot hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid.

The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a paper of multi-color ink-jet printable grade. A proper hydrophicity for the paper is secured by using an 2-oxetanone size in the appropriate sizing steps. The size is made from non-branched and branched-chain fatty acids having main chain comprising 6-22 carbons linked with each other by saturated bonds.

A &ldquo;one-shot&rdquo; composition for use in paper sizing comprises an admixture of a rosin emulsion, a soluble aluminium salt and a cationic starch derivative which has a charged state of 1.0 to 3.5 m equivalents per gramme and which is produced by a process in which the starch structure was split prior to the cationising step.

The present invention relates to a size composition of improving the water repellency of paper in papermaking by virtue of adding prior to web formation to the pulp slurry such a sizing dispersion that contains at least a ketene dimer compound as a hydrophobic sizing agent, and further contains colloidal starch in an amount which is at least 150% by weight of the hydrophobic sizing agent. The invention is particularly applicable for improving the water repellency of paper containing calcium carbonate as the filler.
