In a centrifugal separator and method for cleaning of gas containing solid and liquid impurities. A stationary casing encloses a separation space through which gas flows. An inlet channel extends to the separation space and forms an inlet for the gas to be cleaned. A rotating member is provided in the separation space downstream the inlet and rotates about an axis of rotation. The rotating member comprises a number of separation discs and brings the gas to rotate for separating by means of centrifugal forces a main part of the impurities from the gas. A gas outlet channel is provided downstream the rotating member for discharging the cleaned gas. A first outlet is provided for discharging the impurities. A supply member is configured to permit the supply of a separation aid humidifying the particles, which aid is in the form of an aerosol, to the gas to be cleaned.

Centrifugal separator and a method for cleaning of a gas

Upon cleaning of crankcase gas generated during operation of an internal combustion engine in its crankcase, a centrifugal separator is used, which includes a rotor arranged for rotation by means of a driving motor and arranged by its rotation suck crankcase gas from the crankcase through a conduit to the centrifugal separator. During operation of the combustion engine a parameter, e.g. a measurement of the load on the combustion engine is sensed, the magnitude of said parameter being related to the amount of crankcase gas generated per unit of time in the crankcase. Depending upon a sensed change of the sensed parameter the rotational speed of the rotor of the centrifugal separator is changed in a way such that the gas pressure in the crankcase is maintained at a predetermined value, or within a predetermined pressure interval, during the operation of the combustion engine.

A centrifugal separator to clean a liquid from a substance having a lower density than the liquid comprises a rotor forming a separation chamber (6), in which a stack of conical separation discs (15) is arranged. Liquid and substance dispersed therein flow radially outwards in interspaces between the discs. To increase the separation capability upon a high flow through the separator, the separation discs (15) have a radial inner zone (29a), which has no obstacles for primary flow in the circumferential direction and a radial outer zone (28a), which has so many equally around the rotational axis distributed elongated and through the outer zone (28a) extending obstacles (27a) for liquid flow in circumferential direction that the primary flow in this zone (28a) takes place radially outwards between the obstacles (27a). The obstacles (27a) have such a length and such a direction in relation to the primary flow that the liquid flow in a layer closest to a layer of substance so influences the layer of substance that separated substance is accumulated on and flows radially inwards along the flow obstacle (27a) ahead.

In order to free a liquid form a substance dispersed therein and having a larger density than the liquid a centrifuge rotor is used having a stack of conical separation discs. Elongated spacing members (11a, 11b) in the spaces between the separation discs are formed such that the liquid flow in the disc interspaces is conducted in a certain way. Thus, the main part of the liquid is conducted in flow paths (12a, 12b), each of which has a direction with one radial component and one component turned against the rotational direction of the rotor.

A centrifugal separator has a rotor, which forms an inlet chamber, a separation chamber (5) and an outlet chamber (10), in which a liquid, separated during operation, forms a rotating liquid body with a radially inwardly directed free liquid surface. A stationary discharge device (17) is provided together with rods 20 which are arranged to entrain, during the operation of the rotor, the liquid present in the outlet chamber (10) and to admit flow of such liquid radially outwardly to an inlet (19) in the discharge device (17). The rods are distributed around the rotational axis and rotate with the rotor and form flow spaces which extend axially, radially and in the circumferential direction. They entrain the liquid in the outlet chamber (10) efficiently and to admit flow of the liquid radially outwardly to the inlet (19) with reduced risk of air admixture. A wing extending radially and axially in the outlet chamber may also be provided.
