Surgical systems, navigation systems, and methods involving a robotic manipulator configured to control movement of an instrument to facilitate a surgical procedure. The navigation system includes a camera unit configured to optically track a pose of the instrument and a non-optical sensor coupled to the instrument. The navigation system includes a computing system coupled to the camera unit and being configured to obtain readings from the non-optical sensor. The computing system detects a condition whereby the camera unit is blocked from optically tracking the pose of the instrument. In response to detection of the condition, the computing system tracks the pose of the instrument with the readings from the non-optical sensor.

Optical and non-optical sensor tracking of a robotically controlled instrument

Disclosed is a navigation system configured to track an object. The navigation system comprises a tracker configured to couple to the object and a localization device configured to track the tracker. The tracker and the localization device are configured to wirelessly communicate using a first communication method operable on a first spectrum and to wirelessly communicate using a second communication method operable on a second spectrum different from the first spectrum. The localization device utilizes the first communication method to track the tracker and utilizes the first communication method to manage an operating parameter of the tracker with respect to the second communication method.

High bandwidth and low latency hybrid communication techniques for a navigation system

Systems and methods are disclosed that utilize a robotic device supporting and moving a cutting tool in at least three degrees of freedom. A control system commands the robotic device to control or constrain movement of the cutting tool. A first tracker is coupled to the robotic device and a second tracker is coupled to an anatomy. The second tracker includes three markers that generate optical signals and a non-optical sensor that generates non-optical signals. A navigation system with an optical sensor is in communication with the control system. The navigation system receives, with the optical sensor, the optical signals from one or more of the three markers and receives the non-optical signals from the non-optical sensor. The navigation system communicates position data indicative of a position of the anatomy to the control system to control cutting of the anatomy based on the received optical and non-optical signals.

Optical and non-optical sensor tracking of objects for a robotic cutting system

A system is disclosed for determining a position and a change in the position of an anatomical structure. The system utilizes a surgical navigation system and a substrate that is capable of being removably mounted to an outer surface of a patient's body. The substrate includes a sensor that is tracked by the surgical navigation system and a positional device that determines the position of an anatomical structure relative to the sensor. The concatenation of the position of the sensor and the relative position of the anatomical structure allows a global position of the anatomical structure to be determined by a computer system and displayed to the user.

A navigation system includes an optical sensor for receiving optical signals from markers and a non-optical sensor, such as a gyroscope, for generating non-optical data. A system for collecting and compressing waste collected in a medical or surgical procedure. The system includes a bag for collecting the waste that is seated on a mobile cart. Once the waste is collected the bag is closed and, while on the cart, transported to a compactor. While on the cart, the bag is compacted. Air in the bag is discharged through a one-way valve fitted to the bag. The one way valve may be attached to a cartridge that is inserted into the bag opening. The air discharged from the bag is filtered prior to discharge into the ambient environment. The filter may be built into the one-way valve.

Method for compacting solid medical waste

A system and method for performing object localization based on the emission of electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic fields are simultaneously emitted from different transmitters. One electromagnetic field is emitted at a base frequency; the remaining waves are emitted at frequencies that are harmonics of the base frequency. The composite magnetic fields are measured by sensors. The signal generated by each sensor is subject to a Fourier analysis to determine the strengths of the individual electromagnetic fields forming the composite electromagnetic field. These individual measure field strength data are then used to determine the position and orientation of the sensors relative to the transmitters.

System and method for electromagnetic navigation in the vicinity of a metal object

A system for determining the position and orientation of a tracked object by measuring electromagnetic energy. The system includes a shield of magnetic permeable material positioned on one side of the object to be tracked. A transmitter emits the electromagnetic energy and there is a tracker sensor. One of the transmitter or tracker sensor is attached to the object to be tracked. A correction sensor is at fixed location relative to the transmitter assembly. Both sensors assemblies measure the electromagnetic energy emitted by the transmitter. Based on the energy measured by the correction sensor, the location of a virtual dipole that mirrors the transmitter, the real dipole, on the opposite side of the shield is determined. Based on the positions of the real and virtual dipoles and the energy measured by the tracker sensor, the position and orientation of the tracker sensor relative to the transmitter is determined.

A marker for use with a surgical navigation system for tracking the tissue with which the marker is associated. The overall dimensions of the mark is such that it is shaped to be disposed below the skin of the patient in which the marker is implanted. The marker has a stem or a spike that allows the marker to be implanted in hard tissue such as bone. A head, containing navigation system components is located above the stem or spike. Once the procedure is completed the marker is removed from the patient by breaking the head free from the stem Alternatively the head may be rotated to cause the whole of the marker to break free from the bone in which the marker is implanted.
